There's a reason the Mossberg Patriot shows up in so many deer camps. It gives you the features that matter in a hunting rifle without loading on extras you'll never use. This version is chambered in .308 Winchester, one of the most versatile and easy-to-find hunting cartridges out there, and it wears a 22 inch fluted barrel with a matte blued finish over a classic black synthetic stock. At 6.5 pounds and just under 43 inches overall, it carries well on long walks in and swings quickly in tight timber.
The barrel is button rifled with a 1:10 twist, free-floated in the stock, and finished with a recessed crown to protect the rifling. The fluting trims weight and adds a little character while it's at it. Up top, the trigger is Mossberg's patented LBA (Lightning Bolt Action), which you can adjust yourself from 2 to 7 pounds. Set it light for precise shots from a rest or a bit heavier for cold-weather hunts with gloves on. The spiral-fluted bolt has become something of a Patriot signature, and the knurled handle and comfortable bolt angle make cycling quick and positive when a follow-up shot matters.
Feeding comes from a detachable drop box magazine, so loading and unloading at the truck is simple and safe. There are no iron sights on this model, but Mossberg installs a Weaver-style base at the factory, which means you can mount a scope with a set of rings and head straight to the range to zero. A two-position safety sits right where your thumb expects it.
The synthetic stock shrugs off rain, snow, and the general abuse a working rifle picks up over the seasons, and the recoil pad keeps .308 comfortable for a full day of practice.
