Short barreled bolt guns have taken off with hunters for good reason, and the Mossberg Patriot Carbine in .308 Winchester shows exactly why. The 16.25 inch fluted medium bull barrel keeps the whole rifle at a handy 38.25 inches overall and right around 6.2 pounds, so it slips through thick timber, rides comfortably in a truck or on an ATV, and shoulders fast when a shot presents itself. The muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24, which means you can spin on a suppressor or brake without a trip to the gunsmith. Even with a can attached, this setup still handles like a standard length rifle, just quieter and easier on the ears.
The stiffer medium bull profile resists barrel whip and holds groups together as it heats up, and the recessed match crown protects the rifling where it matters most. A 1:10 twist stabilizes the full range of popular .308 bullet weights, from light varmint loads up through heavy hunting projectiles. Mossberg's patented LBA trigger adjusts from 2 to 7 pounds, so you can run it crisp and light off the bench or a bit heavier for cold weather hunts with gloves. The spiral fluted bolt cycles smoothly, and the oversized handle gives you plenty to grab when working the action in a hurry.
The black synthetic stock shrugs off rain, mud, and bumps without complaint, and the 13.75 inch length of pull fits a wide range of frames, including smaller statured and younger hunters. There are no iron sights, but the top mounted Picatinny rail comes installed and ready for a scope or red dot. Feeding comes from a detachable 5 round drop box magazine that is lightweight and quick to swap.
Deer camp, hog control, steel at the range, or a do-it-all truck rifle, this Patriot covers a lot of ground for the money. It is a straightforward, well thought out .308 that gets the important stuff right without piling on extras you do not need.
Yes, the muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard thread pitch for most .30 caliber suppressors and muzzle brakes. You can attach a can directly without any gunsmithing. Even with a suppressor mounted, the short 16.25 inch barrel keeps the overall package about the same length as a typical full size rifle.
It ships without iron sights and without a scope, but the receiver has a Picatinny rail already installed on top. That gives you a solid mounting platform for whatever scope or red dot fits your hunting or range needs. Just add rings sized to your optic and you are ready to zero.
Published range testing has shown this carbine averaging groups around 1.5 inches at 100 yards with quality factory hunting ammo, which is plenty for deer and hog work well past typical hunting distances. The stiff medium bull barrel, recessed match crown, and adjustable LBA trigger all contribute. Dialing the trigger down toward the lighter end of its 2 to 7 pound range helps get the most out of it.
You give up some velocity compared to a 22 or 24 inch barrel, usually in the neighborhood of 100 to 150 fps depending on the load, but the .308 remains a capable big game cartridge at practical hunting ranges. Many hunters consider the trade well worth it for the easier handling in blinds, brush, and tree stands. The 1:10 twist stabilizes everything from 150 to 178 grain hunting bullets.
