The 590S Shockwave takes everything people like about Mossberg's compact pump guns and adds the one feature the original couldn't offer: true short shell compatibility. This 18.5 inch barrel model cycles 1.75, 2.75, and 3 inch shells interchangeably, and you can mix them in the magazine tube in whatever order you want. No rubber wedge adapter, no fiddling. Mossberg redesigned the elevator, bolt slide, and trigger group and added an energy-absorbing bumper so mini shells feed as smoothly as full-size loads. That flexibility changes capacity too. You get 5+1 with 3 inch magnums, 6+1 with standard 2.75 inch shells, and a healthy 9+1 when you load up with minis.
Handling is where this thing shines. The black synthetic Raptor birdshead grip angles recoil in a way that is much more manageable than a straight vertical grip, and the corn-cob forend with its hand strap keeps your support hand planted right where it belongs during fast pump strokes. At 30.75 inches overall and around 5.5 pounds, it stores easily and moves through tight spaces without snagging. Mini shells make range sessions with it downright fun, cutting felt recoil noticeably while stretching your onboard capacity.

Capacity depends on what you feed it. You get 5+1 with 3 inch shells, 6+1 with standard 2.75 inch loads, and 9+1 when running 1.75 inch mini shells. The longer magazine tube on this 18.5 inch model gives it more onboard capacity than the shorter-barreled versions.
Mechanically they are the same gun, with the same short shell compatibility and Raptor birdshead grip. The 18.5 inch model has a longer barrel and magazine tube, bumping capacity up to 9+1 with minis compared to 8+1 on the shorter one. You also pick up a bit more sight radius and velocity from the extra barrel length.
The birdshead grip does a good job of directing recoil, and the strap on the corn-cob forend keeps your support hand locked in during recoil. Full-power buckshot and 3 inch magnums are stout in any 5.5 pound gun, so expect a firm push. Mini shells are a great option here since they cut recoil way down and make extended range sessions genuinely enjoyable.
