Few firearms have earned a cult following as fast as the Mossberg 590 Shockwave, and this Flat Dark Earth version might be the best looking one of the bunch. The Cerakote coating covers the barrel, magazine tube and receiver in a warm earth tone that pairs nicely with the black polymer Raptor grip and forend. Cerakote is one of the toughest finishes in the business, so this thing shrugs off scratches, sweat and humidity a lot better than a standard blued gun tucked away in a closet or truck.
The Raptor bird's head grip is the heart of this platform. Its shape rolls the recoil impulse through your wrist instead of straight back into it, which makes a 12 gauge without a stock far more manageable than you'd expect. Up front, the corn cob forend wears a nylon strap that keeps your support hand planted and clear of the muzzle while you run the pump. At 5.3 pounds and just over 26 inches long, it maneuvers through doorways and hallways in a way no full-size shotgun can.
Underneath the compact package is the same action that has earned Mossberg pump guns their reputation. You get dual extractors, twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lockup and an anti-jam elevator, plus the ambidextrous top tang safety that sits right under your thumb no matter which hand you shoot with. The 14.375 inch heavy-walled barrel has a cylinder bore and a simple brass bead up front, exactly what you want for close-range work. The magazine tube holds 5+1 with 2.75 inch shells and features a clean-out cap that makes maintenance quick.
The 3 inch chamber digests everything from light target loads to full-power buckshot and slugs. Reduced-recoil defensive loads are a smart pairing here, since they take the edge off follow-up shots in such a light package. Pattern it with a few different loads and you'll quickly find what it likes. Whether it ends up by the nightstand, behind the seat or just as the range gun everyone wants a turn with, this one earns its keep.
It has more bite than a shouldered shotgun, but the Raptor grip is shaped to redirect recoil through your wrist rather than straight back, and the forend strap keeps your support hand locked in. Most people find it very manageable with standard 2.75 inch loads, and reduced-recoil buckshot makes it downright pleasant. Push-pull technique, driving forward with the support hand while pulling back with the grip hand, tames it quickly.
The 3 inch chamber handles everything from birdshot and target loads to 3 inch magnum buckshot and slugs. Capacity is 5+1 with 2.75 inch shells and drops slightly with 3 inch loads. Mini shells will fit, but the standard 590 Shockwave was not designed around them, so a mini shell adapter is a popular add-on if you want them to cycle reliably.
The barrel, receiver and magazine tube wear a Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish, which is a ceramic-based coating known for excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals and wear. It holds up much better than traditional bluing, especially for a firearm that may spend time stored in less-than-ideal conditions. The grip and forend are black synthetic, so the whole package needs minimal fuss.
The receiver is drilled and tapped, so adding a rail or optic mount is straightforward. The aftermarket for the Shockwave is huge, with side saddles, heat shields, lasers and lights all widely available. From the factory it wears a simple brass bead up front, which works well at the close distances this platform is built for.
