There is something about a wood-stocked pump gun that a synthetic tactical shotgun just can't match, and the Mossberg 590 Retrograde leans into that all the way. Mossberg took the workhorse 590 platform and dressed it up the way their first tactical pumps looked decades ago: checkered walnut buttstock with a vented recoil pad, a classic corncob forend, and a removable vented heat shield riding on top of the 18.5 inch matte blued barrel. It looks like it belongs in a black and white photo, but everything underneath is current production 590.
That means dual extractors, twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lockup, and an anti-jam elevator, the same features that made the 590 a standard for defensive pump guns. The ambidextrous top tang safety sits right under your thumb whether you shoot lefty or righty, and the receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory if you ever want to add an optic or ghost ring setup down the road. The magazine tube holds six rounds with one more in the 3 inch chamber, and it has a clean-out cap on the end, which makes maintenance a lot less of a chore.
A fixed bead front sight and cylinder bore choke keep this one purpose-built for close range work. Buckshot, slugs, birdshot for practice, it digests 2.75 and 3 inch shells without complaint. At 7 pounds and 39.5 inches overall, it swings quick in tight spaces but has enough heft to soak up recoil better than the featherweight polymer guns.
This is the shotgun for someone who wants serious home defense capability but would rather have real walnut in their hands than another slab of black plastic. It also just makes a great range gun, the kind you find excuses to bring out. Proven action, classic looks, and that unmistakable pump gun sound. Hard to argue with any of it.
It has a 3 inch chamber, so it runs both 2.75 and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. The cylinder bore barrel patterns buckshot well at defensive distances and handles slugs and birdshot without any issue. Just note the choke is fixed, so there are no interchangeable tubes on this model.
Yes, the vented heat shield on the 590 Retrograde is removable if you prefer a cleaner barrel profile. Most owners leave it on since it completes the classic riot gun look, but you have the option either way.
The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so adding a rail or optic mount is a straightforward job. Out of the box it wears a simple bead front sight, which works fine for close range defensive use, but the mounting options are there if you want a red dot or ghost ring sights later.
