Getting a young hunter set up right usually means buying a bird gun now and a deer gun later. The Mossberg 500 Bantam Combo skips that second purchase. In the box you get a 22" vent rib field barrel with dual bead sights and a set of Accu-Set choke tubes, plus a 24" ported Slugster barrel with a fully rifled bore and adjustable rifle sights. Swap between them in about a minute with no tools, and one 20 gauge covers doves, upland birds, small game, and whitetails.
The Bantam treatment is more than a chopped stock. The hardwood buttstock runs a 13" length of pull, the grip is slimmed down so smaller hands reach the trigger naturally, and the EZ-Reach forend sits closer to the receiver so cycling the pump does not require a full stretch. A vented recoil pad takes the edge off, and 20 gauge loads are friendly enough that new hunters build good habits instead of a flinch. At 6.25 pounds it carries well on long walks, and the ambidextrous tang safety sits right under the thumb for left or right handed use, which also makes it easy for a parent to check at a glance.
Underneath, this is the same 500 action that has been running hard for decades. Dual extractors, twin action bars, an anti-jam elevator, and steel-to-steel lockup keep it cycling through cold mornings, rain, and the general abuse a first shotgun tends to absorb. The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so adding a scope or red dot over that rifled barrel for deer season is a simple job. Capacity is 5+1, the chamber handles 2.75" and 3" shells, and the blued metal over checkered wood gives it a classic look that never goes out of style.
When the shooter eventually outgrows the short stock, a standard 500 buttstock drops right in, and the huge 500 aftermarket means this gun can evolve for years. Few youth packages offer this much versatility out of one box.
The 22" smoothbore field barrel handles birdshot and buckshot, with the included Accu-Set chokes letting you tighten or open the pattern for the game at hand. The 24" barrel is fully rifled, so it is built for sabot slugs, which stabilize best in a rifled bore. Both barrels are chambered for 2.75" and 3" shells.
It works great for both. The 13" length of pull, smaller grip, and EZ-Reach forend were designed for anyone with a shorter reach, so plenty of smaller-framed adults hunt with Bantam models full time. Average-sized adults usually find the stock a bit short but perfectly usable in a pinch.
Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so you can add a rail or base and mount a scope or red dot over the 24" rifled barrel. The barrel also has adjustable rifle sights out of the box, so an optic is optional rather than required.
The short stock, yes, but not the gun. Since this is built on the standard Mossberg 500 receiver, a full-length 500 buttstock swaps in easily once the shooter gets taller. Between that and the massive 500 aftermarket, this combo can stay in the family and keep hunting for decades.
