The stock is a full inch shorter than a standard field model for a 13 inch length of pull, the grip is trimmed down for easier trigger reach, and the EZ-Reach forend sits closer to the shooter so cycling the action doesn't turn into a stretch. Pair all that with a soft-shooting 20 gauge and you've got a gun a young hunter can run with confidence instead of fighting it.
The 22 inch vent rib barrel wears twin bead sights and accepts Mossberg's Accu-Choke tubes, with Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder chokes included. That covers everything from tight patterns on late-season squirrels to open spreads for flushing birds and busting clays. The 3 inch chamber handles both 2-3/4 and 3 inch shells, and the tube holds five 2-3/4 inch rounds with one more in the chamber. Underneath it all you get the proven 500 internals: dual extractors, twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lockup, and an anti-jam elevator that keeps feeding smooth even when the pump stroke isn't perfect, which matters with a new shotgunner at the controls.
The ambidextrous tang safety sits right on top of the receiver where a thumb naturally lands, so it works the same for lefties and righties and it's easy for a mentor to check at a glance. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory if you ever want to add an optic, and sling swivel studs are already in place for a field sling. At 6.5 pounds with a vented recoil pad and classic blued steel over checkered hardwood, this is a handsome, hard-wearing shotgun that looks the part in the duck blind or the dove field. And since it's a true 500, barrels and parts swap easily down the road, so this can stay in the family long after your kid outgrows the first stock.
It works great for both. The 13 inch length of pull, shortened grip, and EZ-Reach forend are sized for anyone with a smaller frame, and plenty of adults prefer a compact 20 gauge for a lighter, faster-handling field gun. If it's for a growing kid, the standard 500 stock architecture means you can swap in a longer stock later.
Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so adding a scope base or optic mount is a straightforward job. Most folks stick with the twin bead sights for wing shooting, but the option is there if you want an optic for turkey or slug work.
Quite a bit. With the included Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder Accu-Chokes and a 3 inch chamber, it covers doves, quail, rabbits, squirrels, turkey, and clay games. The smooth bore will also shoot rifled slugs through the more open chokes if you want to press it into deer duty.
They are, as long as you stay within the same gauge and magazine capacity. That means you can add a longer field barrel or a slug barrel down the road without buying a whole new gun. Maverick 88 barrels in 20 gauge cross over as well, which gives you even more options.
