Built on the battle-proven 590 action, this 12 gauge runs off detachable double-stack magazines, the first of their kind in a production pump gun. That means a full reload is a mag swap instead of thumbing shells one at a time, and you can stage magazines loaded with buckshot, slugs, or birdshot and switch between them in seconds. The included 10-round magazine locks up tight thanks to stabilizing ribs that engage notches machined into the receiver, and the lever-style release sits in front of the trigger guard where either hand can reach it.
The R in the name stands for the new ambidextrous rotary safety selector, an AR-style lever you can flick off without breaking your firing grip. If you learned to run a safety on a carbine, this will feel like home. Mossberg paired it with a flat-profile trigger that breaks clean, a redesigned compact forend that is user-serviceable, and a one-piece heat shield integrated with the 18.5-inch barrel. The five-position adjustable stock with Magpul MOE pistol grip lets you dial length of pull for armor, winter layers, or smaller-framed folks in the household, and it carries QD sling mounting ports too.
This SKU (50213) ships with Magpul MBUS 3 folding sights riding a full-length top Picatinny rail, so you can drop a red dot on and keep the irons folded as backups. A front M-LOK adapter gives you slots on both sides for a light or sling hardware. The barrel is threaded for Accu-Chokes and comes with a cylinder tube installed, which is a nice touch you rarely see on tactical pumps.
Underneath the new features, it is still a 590 where it counts: twin action bars, dual extractors, steel-to-steel lockup, and an anti-jam elevator. No, this model has a 2.75-inch chamber, so stick to standard-length 12 gauge shells. In practice that covers the vast majority of defensive buckshot, slugs, and practice loads, and 2.75-inch shells keep recoil more manageable in a defensive gun anyway.
Traditional 590s use a tang-mounted slide safety on top of the receiver. The 590RM replaces that with an ambidextrous AR-style rotary selector you can sweep with your thumb without shifting your firing grip. If you already run an AR-pattern rifle, the manual of arms will feel immediately familiar.
