Mossberg has been building pump guns longer than most of us have been alive, and the 590R is what happens when they let the tactical side of the house rework the controls. The big change is the ambidextrous rotary safety selector mounted where an AR safety sits. The enlarged, beveled loading port with exposed follower makes topping off the 6+1 tube faster and easier on the thumbs, especially with gloves on.
Underneath the modern furniture, this is still the 590 that earned its keep with dual extractors, twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lockup, and an anti-jam elevator in an aircraft-grade aluminum receiver. The 3-inch chamber digests everything from light target loads to full-power buck and slugs. Magpul handles the ergonomics with an MOE+ pistol grip and a 5-position adjustable stock that dials length of pull from 12 to 15.25 inches, plus two QD sling ports and an interchangeable recoil pad. At 36.25 inches overall and right around 7 pounds, it stays quick through doorways and easy to stage, which is exactly what you want from a home defense shotgun.
Yes, the receiver wears a top Picatinny rail sized for AR-style optics, so most micro red dots bolt right on. The included Magpul MBUS 3 folding sights sit at a height that co-witnesses with common dot optics, so you keep a backup aiming solution if your battery dies.
This model 50759 uses Mossberg's Accu-Choke system and ships with a cylinder bore tube installed. That means you can swap in tighter constrictions later if you want to pattern buckshot differently or stretch its legs a bit. Cylinder bore is the standard choice for defensive loads at typical indoor distances.
Classic 590s use a tang-mounted slide safety on top of the receiver, which gets awkward with a pistol grip stock. The 590R replaces it with an ambidextrous AR-style rotary selector at the thumb, so it runs naturally with the Magpul grip and works identically for lefties. If you already train with a carbine, the manual of arms carries straight over.
The 3-inch chamber accepts both 2.75-inch and 3-inch 12 gauge shells, from light birdshot for practice up to magnum buckshot and slugs.
