Mossberg took the 590, a pump gun that has earned its keep for over sixty years, and reworked it around the way people run defensive shotguns today. The biggest change on the 590R is the ambidextrous rotary safety selector, which sits right where your thumb lands on an AR. If you spend most of your range time behind a carbine, the manual of arms will feel familiar from the first shoulder-up, and you can flick it on or off without shifting your grip. Pair that with a flat profile trigger that breaks clean and crisp, and this feels like a different animal from the tang-safety 590s most folks grew up with.
This version, model 50757, wears a stand-off barrel up front, the notched breacher-style muzzle that gives the gun its name and its no-nonsense look. The 18.5 inch barrel comes with an integrated one-piece heat shield, so it stays put and keeps your support hand off hot steel during longer strings. The cylinder bore choke throws quick, even patterns at defensive distances, and the 6+1 capacity gives you a full tube of 12 gauge on tap. Loading it up is easier too, thanks to an enlarged, beveled loading port with an exposed follower that makes topping off fast and smooth, even with gloves on.
The furniture is where this gun earns bonus points. A 5-position adjustable stock with an interchangeable recoil pad and QD sling ports lets you dial length of pull anywhere from 12 to 15.25 inches, and the Magpul MOE pistol grip keeps your firing hand locked in for pump strokes. Up top, a Picatinny rail accepts red dots and other AR-style optics without any gunsmithing. The OD Green Cerakote on the barrel and receiver is a polymer-ceramic finish known for shrugging off abrasion, holster wear, and moisture, so this one will keep looking sharp after plenty of truck, cabin, and range duty.
At 36.4 inches overall, it stays handy in tight spaces while giving you a real shoulder-fired shotgun with a proper sighting platform. It is the classic 590 reliability with controls and ergonomics that finally caught up to the rest of the safe.
