Buying one shotgun for birds and a second gun for deer season gets expensive fast. Mossberg solved that a long time ago with the 500 Field/Deer Combo, and this 12 gauge version remains one of the smartest ways to cover multiple seasons with a single receiver. Swap barrels in about a minute with no tools, and the gun goes from patterning steel shot over decoys to launching sabot slugs downrange with a scope on top.
The 28 inch vent rib barrel wears twin bead sights and accepts the included Accu-Set choke tubes, so you can tighten or open your pattern for waterfowl, upland birds, turkey, or a casual round of clays. The 24 inch fully rifled Slugster barrel is the deer half of the equation, built to stabilize sabot slugs and paired with a Dead Ringer 2.5x20mm scope right out of the box. Both barrels run through the same 3 inch chamber receiver, which happily digests 2 3/4 inch shells too, and the tube holds 5+1.
Underneath the combo setup is the same action that has made the Model 500 a fixture in duck blinds and deer stands for generations. Twin action bars keep the pump stroke smooth without binding, dual extractors and steel-to-steel lockup handle the hard work, and the anti-jam elevator keeps shells feeding when your hands are cold and you are in a hurry. The tang-mounted safety sits right under your thumb and works the same whether you shoot right or left handed.
The black synthetic stock features a dual comb design, so you get a proper cheek weld whether you are looking down the rib at a bead or up through the scope on the slug barrel. Matte blued metal keeps glare down in the field and cleans up easy after wet mornings. For a new hunter building out their first setup or anyone who wants one gun to do the work of two, this combo is hard to argue with.
Very easy, and no tools are needed. Unscrew the magazine cap, slide the barrel off, seat the other barrel, and tighten the cap back down. Most folks can do the whole swap in under a minute once they have done it once or twice.

The 24 inch barrel is fully rifled, so it is built for sabot slugs, which will give you noticeably better accuracy than rifled slugs out of that bore. Never fire shot loads through the rifled barrel.
The combo ships with a Dead Ringer 2.5x20mm scope for the rifled slug barrel. You will want to confirm the mounting and then sight it in with the sabot slug you plan to hunt with, since every barrel and load combination shoots a little differently. Plan on a range session before opening day.
It is one of the most common recommendations for exactly that reason. You get bird, clay, turkey, and deer capability in one package, and the 500 platform is simple to maintain with a massive aftermarket if you ever want to change things up. The tang safety is also friendly for left-handed users.
