The .300 Win Mag has been putting elk, mule deer, and moose on the ground at long distances for decades, and the Mossberg Patriot LR Hunter gives that proven cartridge a platform built for exactly that kind of work. The 24-inch barrel wrings full velocity out of magnum loads, and the 1:10 twist stabilizes the heavy, high-BC bullets you want when shots get long. The barrel is button rifled, fluted to shave weight and help with cooling, free floated for consistency, and finished with a recessed crown. Threading at the muzzle lets you add a brake or suppressor, which is a welcome option on a .300 mag you plan to practice with regularly.
Where the LR Hunter separates itself from the standard Patriot is the stock. The Spider Gray synthetic Monte Carlo stock has an elevated comb that lines your eye up naturally behind a scope, so you are not craning your neck to find the reticle. Machined aluminum bedding pillars add rigidity where the action meets the stock, and a micro-textured polymer coating gives you a sure grip in wet weather or with gloves on. A Picatinny rail comes installed on the receiver, so mounting optics is about as simple as it gets.
The spiral-fluted bolt runs on a comfortable handle angle with a knurled knob for fast cycling, and the detachable box magazine holds three rounds of .300 Win Mag with one more in the chamber. Mossberg's LBA trigger is user adjustable, so you can dial the pull weight down to a crisp, clean break that suits how you shoot. A crossbolt safety keeps operation simple and familiar.
At 7.5 pounds bare and 44.75 inches overall, this rifle carries well enough for backcountry hunts while still giving you the barrel length and stock geometry to make the most of the cartridge. For hunters who want genuine long-range performance without the price tag of a custom build, this one earns its spot in the safe.
It ships without iron sights or a scope, but a Picatinny rail comes factory installed on the receiver. That means you can mount just about any scope rings or one-piece mount without buying a separate base. The elevated Monte Carlo comb is shaped specifically to give you proper eye alignment behind an optic.
Yes, the 24-inch barrel is threaded from the factory, so it accepts common muzzle brakes and suppressors. On a .300 Win Mag, a good brake makes a noticeable difference in felt recoil, which helps a lot during range sessions. A thread protector keeps the muzzle covered when nothing is attached.
It is. The rifle uses Mossberg's LBA (Lightning Bolt Action) trigger, which is user adjustable for pull weight roughly between 2 and 7 pounds. You can set it light and crisp for precision work or a bit heavier for cold-weather hunting with gloves, all without a trip to a gunsmith.
The biggest upgrade is the stock. The LR Hunter wears a Monte Carlo synthetic stock with a raised comb for scope use, machined aluminum bedding pillars for added rigidity, and a micro-textured Spider Gray coating for grip. Combined with the fluted, threaded, free-floated barrel and included optics rail, it is set up for longer shots than the standard model.
