Description
Getting glass on a Mosin Nagant has always been the tricky part of owning one of these classic battle rifles. EGW solved it with this HD one-piece Picatinny base, a clean-mounting rail that uses your rifle's existing rear sight housing instead of demanding drilling, tapping, or unsoldering. You pull the rear leaf sight, keep the original retaining pin, drop the steel base into the housing, and lock everything down. This is the drilled version (part number 80244) with the pin hole already machined, so for most 91/30 rifles it's ready to go right out of the package.
What Makes This Mosin Nagant Base Different
The build quality is where this mount earns its keep. The top rail is machined from solid 7075 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum and finished in a Type III hardcoat matte black anodize, while the lower base is cut from 4140 steel and blued for strength where it counts. A center channel runs the length of the rail to trim weight, and in many setups it leaves enough room to keep using your factory iron sights. EGW tests these to lock up with no play whatsoever once installed.
Fitting an Optic to the Mosin Nagant 91/30
This is a true Picatinny platform, so it accepts any standard Picatinny or Weaver rings you already own. The rail carries a 0 MOA cant, which is the sweet spot for most shooters running inside 500 yards. Because the mount sits forward over the receiver, pairing it with a long eye relief or scout-style scope tends to give the most comfortable sight picture. It's ambidextrous and quick-disconnect ring compatible, and the whole thing including the hardware and packaging is made in the USA.
Installation Notes
Mounting hardware and a wrench come in the box. EGW recommends torquing the screws to roughly 20 inch-pounds with a drop of blue thread locker to keep things honest under recoil. It's a straightforward afternoon project with basic tools, and the result is a stable, modern optics platform on a rifle that never had a good one from the factory.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to drill or tap my Mosin Nagant to install this mount?
No drilling into the receiver and no soldering is required. The base installs by removing your rear leaf sight and seating into the existing rear sight housing, reusing the rifle's original retaining pin. This 80244 version already has the pin hole drilled, so for most 91/30 rifles it mounts without a trip to the gunsmith.
Will this fit all Mosin Nagant rifles?
It's made for the standard round-receiver Mosin Nagant 91/30. It will not fit hex-receiver variants, and because there are manufacturing inconsistencies across these old rifles, EGW suggests measuring your receiver hole spacing against their published dimensions before installing. If your factory pin location doesn't line up, EGW also offers an undrilled version for a gunsmith to pin to your specific rifle.
What kind of scope works best on this Picatinny base?
Any scope with standard Picatinny or Weaver rings will clamp right on, and the rail is quick-disconnect ring compatible. Since the mount sits forward over the receiver, a long eye relief or scout-style scope usually gives the most natural sight picture. A traditional riflescope can work too, just plan your ring and scope placement around that forward position.
Can I still use my iron sights with this mount installed?
The center channel machined down the length of the rail is designed to reduce weight and, in many cases, leave your factory iron sights usable. That said, it depends on your specific rifle and the optic you mount, so results vary from gun to gun.
