Getting a solid optic on an AK has always been the tricky part. Side rails add height and weight, and a lot of guys just don't want to drill or weld their receiver. The Midwest Industries AK Alpha Mini Dot Mount takes a different route. It replaces the factory rear sight and gives you a Picatinny rail section for any mini red dot running a Picatinny mount, all without permanent changes to the rifle.
The part that sets this one apart is how it locks down. It uses a steel locking block that clamps onto the top of the receiver where the rear sight used to sit, and there's a way to level and center it on the rear sight block so it lines up straight. Folks who have run it note it holds zero well over a few hundred rounds and feels overbuilt in the best way, which is exactly what you want out of a red dot base. It's machined from hard coat anodized 6061 aluminum in black, so it wears like it should on a working rifle.
This is built for AK-47 and AK-74 rear sights on both stamped and milled receivers, so it covers most standard AKM-pattern rifles. One thing worth knowing up front: full field stripping still works on standard AKM guns, but Yugo-pattern rifles won't strip fully with it installed. If you're running a mini reflex like a Holosun or similar, this is a great home for it. It's meant for smaller optics, not full-size sights.
Swapping it in is a rear sight job, so most folks handle it at the bench with basic tools in about an hour, though a gunsmith is always a safe bet if you'd rather not fuss with it. It also carries a built-in iron sight that gives you a lower 1/3 co-witness with most red dots, so your backup sighting is baked right in. The rail also sits nice and low, which keeps your dot close to the bore for a natural sight picture. And since nothing is permanent, your factory rear sight goes right back on whenever you want.
This version gives you a standard Picatinny rail section, so any mini red dot with a Picatinny mount will bolt right up. It's designed around smaller reflex sights rather than full-size optics, so a mini dot is the sweet spot. Users have had good luck running compact dots on it and keeping zero over several hundred rounds.

On standard AKM-pattern rifles, yes, the design still allows full field stripping. The one exception is Yugo-pattern rifles, which won't fully strip with the mount in place. If you're running a common stamped or milled AK, you're good to go.
