Description

A taper crimp puts a clean, uniform squeeze on the case mouth without rolling it over, and that makes it a favorite for .223 handloaders who want to keep bullets locked in place under the recoil of a semi-auto without working the brass too hard. Redding's Micro-Adjustable version takes that same proven crimp and adds a knurled micrometer barrel right on top of the die, so you can tune the amount of crimp while the die stays threaded in your press. That alone saves a lot of back-and-forth fiddling with the lock ring.

Why the Micro-Adjustable .223 Die Beats a Standard Taper Crimp

Adjusting a conventional taper crimp die means fighting the coarse 7/8-14 threads and resetting the lock ring every time, which is slow and tough to repeat exactly. This die skips all that. The micrometer up top gives you roughly plus or minus .100 inch of adjustment after your initial setup, dialed in .001 inch increments, with white hash marks that make it easy to see and return to a setting. Case length and case wall thickness both throw off a standard crimp, and the micrometer lets you account for those variations without guesswork.

Built for Progressive Presses and High-Volume .223 Loading

If you're cranking out .223 on a progressive, the on-the-fly tuning is where this die earns its keep. There's no need to break your rhythm or pull the die to tweak things. Inside, a hardened steel sleeve forms the crimp and the die body is machined to tight tolerances for a close, concentric fit on your finished rounds. Note that the .223 Remington model is non-reversible, so the internal sleeve is set for this cartridge and installs in one orientation.

Fits the .223 Loader Who Wants Consistency

Taper crimping shines on bullets without a cannelure, and it gives you repeatable neck tension round after round. Made in the USA, this die threads into any standard 7/8-14 press and pairs with your existing shellholder, which is sold separately. It's a solid pick for anyone chasing uniform ammo and faster setup at the bench.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a separate seating die with this taper crimp die?

Yes. This is a dedicated crimp-only die, so you seat your bullets with your seating die first, then run the case through this die to apply the taper crimp. Crimping in a separate step gives you more consistent results than seating and crimping at the same time.

Can I adjust the crimp without taking the die out of the press?

That's the whole point of the micro-adjustable design. The knurled micrometer barrel sits on top of the die, so you can fine-tune the crimp on the fly without unthreading it or messing with the lock ring. It's especially handy on a progressive press where space is tight.

Is a shellholder included with the .223 taper crimp die?

No, the shellholder is sold separately. You'll want a standard shellholder sized for the .223 Remington / 5.56 case head. If you're already loading .223, you most likely have the correct one on hand.

Will this die work in my press?

It uses the standard 7/8-14 thread, so it threads into any common single-stage, turret, or progressive reloading press. The .223 model is non-reversible, meaning the internal crimp sleeve is set for this cartridge and installs in one orientation.
