No. The Elite Muzzle Brake uses a built-in overlapping lock nut, so it's essentially plug and play on a threaded barrel. You thread it on, rotate it until the ports are indexed straight, then tighten the lock nut to hold it in place. No shims and no machine work required.
MDT rates it at up to 66 percent recoil reduction, though real-world results vary with caliber, load and rifle weight. Independent testing has shown more moderate figures depending on setup, but the felt difference is significant regardless. Most folks notice flatter muzzle rise and much easier target reacquisition right away.
Like any effective muzzle brake, it redirects gas and sound out to the sides, so it will be louder and more concussive for anyone standing beside you.
