Description

The PDX started life as Maxim Defense's answer to the SOCOM PDW solicitation, and it went on to take Best of SHOT honors from RECOIL Magazine in 2019. This version chambers 7.62×39, which is a big deal because getting that cartridge to cycle dependably out of a 5.5 inch barrel has stumped plenty of builders over the years. Maxim cracked it with a proprietary bolt carrier group that seats interchangeable buffer weights partially inside the carrier itself, so the whole system cycles fully in a gun that measures just 18.75 inches from muzzle to buttpad.

Why the PDX SBR Stays So Short

The secret is the patented SCW stock system, which trims the rear of the receiver down to about 4 inches collapsed and extends to roughly 8.8 inches across five positions. There is no clunky buffer tube hanging off the back, yet you still get a solid cheek weld and a real shoulder stock. Up front, the HATEBRAKE muzzle booster tucks under the handguard and does serious work, cutting felt recoil, taming flash, and pushing gas and concussion downrange instead of back into your face. Recoil on this thing is surprisingly soft for a rifle-caliber gun this small, and the factory-installed ALG Combat Trigger gives you a clean, crisp break right out of the box.

Feeding and Setting Up Your PDX

The flat top receiver and M-LOK handguard with Picatinny rail leave you free to run whatever optic and accessories fit your setup, and it ships with a 20 round magazine. Steel-cased range ammo and premium defensive loads both cycle well thanks to that tunable buffer system.

Where the Maxim PDX Earns Its Keep

Vehicle work, home defense, tight hallways, or just a truck gun that hits well above its size, this is where the PDX shines. The Arid FDE finish looks sharp and wears hard. It is a purpose-built piece of engineering, not a shortened afterthought.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the PDX SBR run 7.62×39 reliably out of such a short barrel?

Maxim Defense designed a proprietary bolt carrier group where the buffer weights sit partially inside the carrier itself, which lets the gun cycle fully despite the compact SCW system replacing a traditional buffer tube. The weights are interchangeable, so you can tune cycling to your preferred ammo. It has earned a reputation as one of the few truly reliable ultra-short 7.62×39 platforms.

What is the SCW stock system on the Maxim PDX?

SCW stands for Sub Compact Weapon, and it is Maxim's patented stock that collapses down to roughly 4 inches at the rear of the receiver, far shorter than a standard AR buffer tube setup. It extends to about 8.8 inches with five adjustment positions and deploys with a simple pull, no buttons required. That is how the whole gun stays at just 18.75 inches overall.

Does the Maxim Defense PDX SBR come with sights or an optic?

No, it ships optic ready with a flat top Picatinny rail and no iron sights installed. Most owners run a compact red dot, which suits the close quarters role this gun was built for. The M-LOK handguard gives you room for a light or other accessories too.

Can I run the PDX suppressed?

Yes, the gas system is set up to run with the factory HATEBRAKE muzzle booster or a suppressor, and swapping between the two generally requires no retuning. The HATEBRAKE itself sits under the handguard and redirects blast and gas forward, which makes unsuppressed shooting noticeably more pleasant as well. Maxim also offers its own suppressor line designed around the PDX platform.
