Maxim Defense earned RECOIL's Best of SHOT award in 2019 with the original PDX, a 5.56 PDW born straight out of the SOCOM solicitation. The PDX-SD is what happened when their engineers decided the only thing missing was signature reduction, so they designed a suppressor and the gun around each other from day one. The result is a 5.5 inch barreled 5.56 pistol with a built-in can that keeps the whole package at 23.75 inches from tail to tip, shorter than most bare 10.5 inch AR pistols wearing nothing at all.
The suppressor module, affectionately nicknamed the soup can thanks to its 2.25 inch outer diameter, was purpose-tuned for this barrel length and gas system rather than bolted on as an afterthought. That matters on a gun this short, where gas and blast are usually the price of admission. Unlike most integrally suppressed designs, the module comes off for cleaning and maintenance, so you get the balance and tuning of an integral with the serviceability of a traditional setup. Underneath, the 1/2×28 threaded muzzle keeps your options open.
Maxim's patented SCW system trims the rear of the receiver down to roughly 4 inches by pairing a shortened bolt carrier group with interchangeable buffer weights. It is the core of what makes the PDX platform this compact, and it genuinely helps with recoil control and quick follow-up shots. Ambidextrous controls, an HK-height top rail on a rigid upper, an M-LOK free float handguard, and a Radian charging handle round out a build that feels premium everywhere your hands land.
This is a purpose-built tool for tight spaces: vehicles, hallways, and anywhere a full-size carbine gets clumsy. It ships with a 20-round magazine, wears a hard-anodized black finish, and delivers dependable hits out to 100 yards, which is more reach than most guns this size can claim.
Yes, and that is one of the smartest parts of the design. While the suppressor was engineered specifically for this gun and tuned as an integrated system, the module itself comes off for cleaning and routine maintenance. That gives you the balance and gas management of an integral setup without the upkeep headaches most integrally suppressed guns come with.
The standard PDX is the unsuppressed version with a HATEBRAKE muzzle booster, measuring 18.75 inches overall. The PDX-SD builds the suppressor into the platform, stretching overall length to a still very compact 23.75 inches. Both share the same 5.5 inch barrel, SCW brace system, and ambidextrous controls.
The SCW system shortens the rear of the gun to roughly 4 inches by using a chopped-down buffer tube paired with a shortened bolt carrier group and interchangeable buffer weights. It is the key to keeping the overall package so small while still cycling reliably. The interchangeable weights also let you tune recoil impulse to your ammo.
More than you might think. Maxim builds these around a 2 MOA capable barrel, and range testing shows consistent hits on steel at 100 yards with groups in the 3 to 4 inch range. This platform was designed for close quarters work first, so inside typical defensive distances it is plenty precise.
