Maxim Defense built this 8.6 Blackout load specifically for the realities of short-barrel shooting. When a gun is running an 8-inch or 12-inch barrel, you don't get the velocity that longer guns produce, and you lose terminal performance along with it. Maxim partnered with Fort Scott Munitions to engineer ammunition that compensates for those limitations while maintaining the precision you need.
The solid copper projectile uses Tumble Upon Impact technology that keeps working all the way down to 500 fps. This matters more than it sounds because the TUI design doesn't rely on expansion or fragmentation the way traditional hunting rounds do. Instead, the bullet penetrates hard barriers like bone first, then tumbles in soft tissue to create a much larger wound cavity than velocity alone would produce. The design maintains 100% weight retention, so energy transfer stays consistent even through heavy barriers.
With a 235-grain load pushing 1600 fps, this ammunition was tuned for the velocity envelope that short barrels naturally produce. You're not fighting physics trying to drive this round to speeds it can't reach. The load adjustments mean you get reliable cycling and consistent accuracy without the velocity loss you'd see with ammunition designed for longer barrels.
The solid copper spun construction means you can shoot this ammunition in areas where traditional lead projectiles are restricted. The ammunition comes in 20-round boxes and is manufactured to match-grade standards.
At 1600 fps, this load runs supersonic. It's engineered for short-barrel rifles that might struggle with heavier subsonic loads while still delivering the terminal performance TUI technology provides. If you need subsonic rounds for suppressed work, you'd want to look at heavier grain weights in the 285-grain range.
Yes, this load was specifically optimized for short-barrel platforms. The 235-grain TUI projectile is designed to tumble effectively at the velocities and impact conditions short barrels produce. Make sure your barrel has the 1:3 or 1:6 twist rate that 8.6 Blackout uses to properly stabilize this bullet weight.
If your AR-10 is in .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor, swapping to an 8.6 Blackout barrel is straightforward. The 8.6 Blackout uses the same .308 bolt face and standard magazines. Just verify that your new barrel is specifically chambered for 8.6 Blackout with the correct twist rate.
The solid copper projectile construction, precision manufacturing, and specialized TUI technology come at a cost. Maxim also partnered with Fort Scott Munitions to engineer load-specific optimization for short barrels rather than using generic commercial recipes. You're paying for ammunition that actually works in the ballistic envelope where your gun operates.
