Short-barrel rifles have a lot going for them, but they do come with a tradeoff: velocity and terminal ballistics suffer compared to rifles with longer barrels. Maxim Defense tackled this problem head-on by partnering with Fort Scott Munitions to develop a load specifically optimized for SBRs in close-quarters situations.
This ammunition uses Fort Scott's proprietary Solid Copper Spun (SCS) projectile with Tumble Upon Impact (TUI) technology. Instead of relying on expansion or fragmentation, the design causes the bullet to tumble end-over-end once it hits soft tissue, creating an extended wound cavity while maintaining mass and penetration. The TUI engineering keeps the projectile tumbling effectively all the way down to 500 fps, which matters for an SBR platform where velocity is naturally lower.
The 117-grain solid copper bullets are precision-machined with tight tolerances typical of match-grade ammunition. Because there's no lead core and no hollow points or special grooves, the projectiles feed reliably through modern platforms without the complications that plague some specialty designs. Each round comes in reloadable brass cases with quality primers and powder charges carefully selected for consistency.
Solid copper construction means cleaner shooting with less bore fouling compared to traditional ammo. The lead-free design works well in ranges with environmental restrictions.
