The 3 inch chamber handles everything from light 2.75 inch target loads for practice up to full-power buckshot and magnum shells. Capacity is 5+1, and the cross-bolt safety sits right at the trigger guard where your finger naturally finds it.

That means you can add a longer vent-rib field barrel later and use this gun for hunting or clays. Stocks generally interchange too, though the trigger group and safety location differ from the 500.
The 3 inch chamber runs both 2.75 inch and 3 inch 12 gauge shells, from light birdshot and target loads up to buckshot, slugs, and magnum loads. The fixed cylinder bore choke has no constriction, which makes it a good match for buckshot and rifled slugs at defensive distances.
The Maverick 88 uses a cross-bolt safety positioned at the front of the trigger guard, similar to a Remington 870. This is the main functional difference from the Mossberg 500, which has a tang-mounted safety on top of the receiver. The cross-bolt setup works well with the folding stock since it stays accessible whether the stock is folded or extended.
