The Maverick 88 Slug is one of those guns that does exactly what it says on the box. You get a 12 gauge pump action with a 24 inch blued barrel, a 3 inch chamber, 5+1 capacity, and adjustable rifle sights sitting right where you want them for slug work. The cylinder bore barrel throws Foster style rifled slugs plenty accurate for woods hunting distances, and the open rifle sights are a big step up over trying to aim a slug with a plain bead. Plenty of folks have taken their first deer behind one of these, and there is a good reason for that.
Under the hood this is essentially Mossberg 500 DNA at a working man's price. Maverick Arms builds the 88 with twin action bars, dual extractors, an anti-jam elevator, and positive steel-to-steel lockup, which is why these pumps have a reputation for running through mud, rain, and neglect without complaint. The main difference from the 500 is the crossbolt safety in the trigger guard instead of the tang slide, and honestly a lot of people prefer it that way. Even better, the 88 accepts Mossberg 500 barrels, stocks, and Accu-Choke tubes within gauge and capacity, so you can swap on a 28 inch bird barrel later and turn one gun into a whole battery.
The black synthetic stock and forearm shrug off weather and scratches, the blued steel wears well, and the recoil pad takes some sting out of full power slug loads. At around 43.5 inches overall and roughly 7 pounds, it carries fine through timber and swings quick in a shooting house. Between deer duty in the fall and standing guard by the back door the rest of the year, the Maverick 88 Slug earns its keep. It is not fancy, and that is exactly the point. Load it, rack it, and it goes to work every single time.
This model, part number 31017, has a smoothbore cylinder bore barrel with a fixed choke. It is meant to be paired with Foster style rifled slugs, where the rifling is on the slug itself rather than in the barrel. If you want to run sabot slugs, Maverick offers a separate fully rifled version of the 88 Slug, but for standard rifled slugs at typical woods hunting distances this one does the job well.
Yes, the Maverick 88 is fully compatible with Mossberg 500 barrels, stocks, and Accu-Choke tubes as long as you stay within the same gauge and capacity. That makes it easy to add a longer vent rib barrel for birds or a shorter barrel for home use down the road. Keep in mind the 88 forearm is attached to its action slide assembly, so forend swaps work a little differently than on a 500.
It sure can. The 3 inch chamber handles both 2.75 inch and 3 inch 12 gauge shells, so you can run everything from light target loads to full power magnum slugs and buckshot. The recoil pad and roughly 7 pound weight help keep heavier loads manageable.
Yes, the rear rifle sight is adjustable so you can dial in your point of impact with your preferred slug load. That is a real advantage over a plain bead when you are shooting slugs, since different brands and weights can print to different spots. Sight it in with the ammo you plan to hunt with and you will be set.
