Description
Getting a quality optic onto a vintage Mauser used to mean dealing with odd factory mounts or a trip to the gunsmith. EGW's Mauser 98 Large Ring Picatinny Rail takes care of that with a single-piece base that drops onto factory drilled and tapped Large Ring commercial actions. The full-length Picatinny cross slots give you room to slide your rings fore and aft, so dialing in proper eye relief comes down to you and your scope, not where the holes happen to land.
What Sets This Mauser 98 Rail Apart
This base is machined from domestic 6061-T6 extruded aluminum and finished with a matte black Type II anodize that holds up to real field use. A relieved channel down the center trims the weight to right around 2 ounces without giving up rigidity, and in many setups the lower profile won't block your factory iron sights. The slots accept standard Picatinny or Weaver rings, so you're not locked into any one ring system.
Fitment for Your Large Ring Mauser
This is the 0 MOA version, which is the one you want for general shooting and hunting work inside about 500 yards. It's cut to fit a long list of Large Ring commercial Mausers including the FN Mauser action, Interarms Mark X, Parker Hale 1200, Santa Barbara Mauser, Zastava M70, Remington 798, and several Herter's, Husqvarna, and JC Higgins variants. It does not fit the 3000 L or the Mauser M12, so it's always smart to measure your receiver hole spacing against the published center spread of 3.825 inches before you order.
Installing the Mauser 98 Scope Base
Mounting is straightforward. EGW includes the hardware and the bit, and they recommend torquing the screws to 20 inch-pounds with a drop of blue thread locker to keep everything locked down through recoil. Do that once and you've got a solid, repeatable foundation for your glass that'll outlast a lot of the optics you bolt to it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this EGW rail fit my Large Ring Mauser 98?
It's made for factory drilled and tapped Large Ring commercial Mauser actions, including the FN Mauser action, Interarms Mark X, Parker Hale 1200, Santa Barbara Mauser, Zastava M70, and Remington 798. It does not fit the 3000 L or the Mauser M12. Measure your receiver hole spacing against the 3.825 inch center spread before ordering to confirm the match.
What rings do I need for this Mauser 98 Picatinny rail?
The base uses full-length Picatinny cross slots that accept standard Picatinny or Weaver scope rings. Pick ring height based on your scope's objective diameter and how low you want to sit the optic. Note that this rail is not compatible with quick disconnect rings.
What's the difference between the 0 MOA and 20 MOA versions?
This is the 0 MOA rail, which keeps the base level with no built-in forward cant. EGW recommends the 0 MOA for shooting roughly 0 to 500 yards, which covers most hunting and range work. The 20 MOA version adds elevation for shooters reaching out to longer distances.
Does the rail block the iron sights on my Mauser?
Because of its low 0.4 inch profile, in many setups this rail will not obstruct the use of factory iron sights. That said, it varies by rifle and sight configuration, so it's worth test-fitting on your specific gun.
