Description

The factory Ruger American shoots well, but that hollow polymer stock leaves a lot on the table. The Magpul Hunter American fixes that in an afternoon. It's a true drop-in replacement for short-action Ruger American rifles, and swapping it over takes little more than a torque wrench, the right bit, and about ten minutes. Once it's in, you get a rifle that feels like it was built around you instead of the other way around.

What Makes the Hunter American Stock Different

The backbone here is a Type III hard-anodized cast aluminum bedding block paired with high-strength steel recoil lugs. That combo lets the barreled action drop straight in with no bedding required, and it free-floats barrel profiles all the way up to a medium Palma contour without any modification. The reinforced polymer shell wraps around that rigid core, so you get the stability of a chassis with the feel and warmth of a traditional stock. Plenty of owners report their groups tightening up and fliers cleaning up after the swap.

Dialing In the Fit

This is where the Hunter American earns its keep. Length of pull adjusts from 13.0 to 15.0 inches using the included spacers, and the comb height is adjustable so you can line up perfectly behind your scope. The stock ships with a 0.25-inch cheek riser pre-installed, with 0.00, 0.50, and 0.75-inch risers available if you want to fine-tune your cheek weld further. An anti-slip rubber butt-pad keeps everything planted on your shoulder.

Mounting Gear and Feeding

Seven M-LOK slots run along the sides and bottom of the forend, giving you clean attachment points for a bipod, sling, or Arca rail. The stock also includes Magpul's Bolt Action Magazine Well, which converts your rifle to run reliable AICS-pattern detachable box magazines. One install tip worth knowing: use the action screws Magpul provides rather than the longer factory Ruger screws, which can bind against the bolt. Torque to spec and you're set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Magpul Hunter American stock fit my Ruger American?

It's built for short-action, right-hand Ruger American centerfire rifles, including .308-based cartridges like .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 6mm Creedmoor. It fits both Gen 1 and Gen II short-action rifles as a true drop-in with no bedding needed. It does not fit long-action calibers like 6.5 PRC or 300 Win Mag. If your rifle runs AR-style STANAG magazines, you'll want the STANAG version instead of this one.

Does the Hunter American stock come with a magazine?

Yes. It includes Magpul's Bolt Action Magazine Well along with a PMAG 5 7.62 AC, so you can run detachable AICS-pattern box magazines right out of the box. That PMAG is sized for .308 Win and similar cartridges. If you're shooting a smaller or larger case, you'll need to grab a matching AICS-pattern magazine separately.

Is installation something I can do at home?

Absolutely. Most folks have it done in ten to thirty minutes with a torque wrench, the correct bit, and a socket wrench. Be sure to use the action screws Magpul supplies rather than the longer factory Ruger screws, since the longer ones can contact the bolt and hang up cycling. Torque the action screws to the spec in the instructions and you're good to go.

Can I remove the bolt with the cheek riser installed?

On some rifles the raised comb sits close to the bolt path, so a quick trick helps: pull the bolt all the way back, then rotate it 180 degrees and it will clear without lowering the riser. Otherwise you can drop the cheek riser in a couple of minutes to pull the bolt. It's a minor step once you know the routine.
