The Magpul M-LOK Thumb Shelf solves that by giving you an actual physical shelf to rest your thumb against every single time you pick up the rifle, so your hand lands in the same place without having to think about it.
The top surface is ribbed and slightly curved, which keeps your thumb from sliding off during recoil instead of just sitting there flat. That contact point lets you drive a bit of downward pressure into the handguard to help fight muzzle rise, and it also gives you something to brace against when you're shooting off a barrier or barricade. It's a small part, but the difference shows up in tighter groups and quicker follow-up shots once your grip stops changing between strings of fire.
This one is built specifically for octagonal aluminum M-LOK handguards and forends. It won't seat correctly on polymer M-LOK rails or on handguards with a rounder profile, so it's worth checking your rail shape before ordering. Since it only takes up a single M-LOK slot, you're not sacrificing much real estate, which means there's still plenty of room left over for a light, laser, or vertical grip on the same rail section.
Magpul made the Thumb Shelf symmetrical so it works the same whether you're running it as a right or left-handed shooter, no flipping parts or buying a mirrored version. It's molded from Magpul's proprietary polymer, the same tough material used across their other handguard accessories, and it's made in the USA. At under half an ounce, you'll barely notice the added weight, but you will notice the difference in how your support hand sits on the gun.
It gives your support hand thumb a fixed, repeatable spot to rest on the handguard instead of hunting for a comfortable position every time you shoulder the rifle. The ribbed curved top helps your thumb stay put under recoil, which translates into better muzzle control and faster follow-up shots.
