The Magpul CTR (Compact/Type Restricted) is one of those upgrades that just makes sense the first time you shoulder it. It's a drop-in replacement buttstock for AR-15, M16, and M4 carbines running mil-spec sized receiver extension tubes, so swapping out a rattly factory stock takes a few minutes and no gunsmithing. Made from reinforced polymer in Flat Dark Earth, it keeps the weight down at right around 8.8 ounces while feeling far more solid than the basic stocks these rifles usually ship with.
The headline here is the supplemental friction lock. With a quick throw of the lever, the CTR clamps down onto the buffer tube and takes the wobble, rattle, and play out of the equation. That tight lockup is exactly what folks who have run a bare mil-spec stock are chasing, and it's the feature that comes up again and again from people who upgrade. Pair that with the slim A-frame profile and a shielded release latch, and you get a stock that moves cleanly through slings, plate carriers, and brush without catching on anything or bumping loose.
The sloped cheek weld gives you a consistent, comfortable spot to settle into behind an optic or irons, and the 0.30-inch rubber butt-pad keeps the gun planted on your shoulder even when you're wearing body armor or bulky gear. For sling setups, you've got ambidextrous QD sling sockets that take any standard push-button swivel, plus 1.25-inch loops if you prefer a more traditional mount. The length of pull adjusts across six positions from 10.5 to 13.8 inches, so it fits a wide range of shooters and shooting positions.
Made in the USA, the CTR has earned its reputation as a go-to entry-level Magpul stock for a reason. It hits the sweet spot of light weight, rock-solid feel, and clean ergonomics, and it plays nicely with the CTR cheek riser if you want to build it out further down the road.
The CTR is built for mil-spec sized carbine receiver extension tubes, which is what the vast majority of AR-15s use. It will not fit commercial-spec tubes or an A5 length buffer tube. The buffer tube itself is not included, so you'll reuse the one already on your rifle as long as it's mil-spec.
That's really the whole point of it. The friction lock lever clamps the stock down onto the buffer tube, and once it's cinched the play and rattle you get from a bare mil-spec stock basically disappears. It's the feature people mention most often after making the swap.
It's a true drop-in job. You pop your old stock off the buffer tube and slide the CTR right on, no gunsmithing or special tools required. Most folks have it done in a couple of minutes.
You get ambidextrous QD sling sockets that accept any standard push-button swivel, so you can run a sling on either side. There are also 1.25-inch sling loops if you'd rather use a more traditional loop-style mount. Current production stocks use limited-rotation QD sockets.
