It's a one-piece wraparound grip molded from Pachmayr's proprietary blended rubber compound, with a diamond-plate style texture that bites into your palm enough to stay put under recoil without chewing up your hands or your cover garment.
The front strap section features low-profile finger grooves that index your hand to the same position every time you pick up the gun. That consistency matters more than most shooters realize; a repeatable grip is one of the simplest paths to tighter groups and faster follow-up shots. And because the grooves are kept shallow rather than aggressively sculpted, they work across a wide range of hand sizes instead of dictating exactly where each finger has to land. If you'd rather run a bare front strap, the finger groove section can be trimmed away so the Diamond Pro functions as a set of rubber grip panels instead. The Diamond Pro is built for standard full-size Government-pattern 1911 frames. Commander models share the same frame size as Government models, so fit is generally fine there, but Officer and other compact frames have shorter grips and this won't fit them properly. If you're running a compact 1911, look for a grip made specifically for that frame size.
Yes. The grip is relieved to clear both standard and ambidextrous safeties right out of the package, so left-handed shooters and anyone running an ambi safety lever can install it without any cutting or fitting.
You can. Pachmayr designed the front strap finger groove section so it can be trimmed away, which converts the wraparound into a set of side panels. That lets you try the grooves first and still have a usable grip if you decide a bare front strap suits you better.
Because it's a wraparound design with rubber covering the front strap, it does fill the hand a bit more than thin wood or G10 panels. Most shooters with medium to large hands find it improves comfort and control, especially with .45 ACP loads. If you have smaller hands and already find your 1911 grip on the larger side, that's worth keeping in mind.
Not at all. The grip stretches over the frame and secures with your existing grip screws, the same way standard panels do. Remove your old grips, slip the Diamond Pro into place, line up the screw holes, and snug the screws down. Most folks have it done in under ten minutes with just a screwdriver.
