Description

Piston-driven ARs live or die by their engineering, and LWRC has been getting it right longer than just about anyone. The IC-MKII is the follow-up to the IC-A5, the rifle that grew out of LWRC's submission for the Army's Individual Carbine program, and it keeps the same self-regulating short-stroke gas piston at its core. Instead of dumping hot, carbon-heavy gas into the receiver, the system vents it up front, so the bolt carrier stays cool and clean enough that maintenance is mostly a wipe-down. The one-piece nickel boron carrier helps there too, with rearward relief cuts that let water and debris escape rather than tie up the action.

What Makes the IC-MKII Different From the IC-A5

The biggest changes live up top. The Monoforge one-piece upper borrows its machining style from LWRC's REPR MKII line, giving the rifle a stiffer, stronger backbone than a standard two-piece setup. The old proprietary rail gave way to a longer free-float M-LOK handguard that slides off after loosening two screws, which makes getting at the piston system genuinely easy. The two-position gas block carries over, now with a butterfly-style adjustment key you can reach through cutouts in the handguard, so switching between normal and suppressed settings takes seconds.

A Barrel LWRC Forges In-House

The 16.1 inch barrel is cold hammer forged at LWRC's Maryland facility, spiral fluted to trim better than 20 percent of the weight while adding rigidity and shedding heat faster. A treated finish resists corrosion and wear, and the 1:7 twist handles everything from 55 grain plinking ammo to 77 grain match loads. The muzzle is threaded 1/2-28 for brakes and suppressors.

Set Up Right Out of the Box

Every control is truly ambidextrous, including the safety, magazine release, bolt catch, and charging handle. LWRC's compact adjustable stock, fish-scale textured Ultra grip, nickel boron coated enhanced fire control group, and flip-up Skirmish sights come standard, along with a 30-round Magpul PMAG. Add an optic if you want one and this rifle is ready for duty, home defense, or a whole lot of range time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the LWRC IC-MKII suppressor ready?

Yes, and it is one of the best setups out there for running a can. The muzzle is threaded 1/2-28 for standard 5.56 muzzle devices, and the two-position gas block lets you switch between normal and suppressed settings. On the MKII, the new butterfly-style adjustment key is reachable right through the cutouts in the M-LOK handguard, so you do not have to pull anything apart to make the change.

What did LWRC change from the IC-A5 to the IC-MKII?

The core piston system carries over, but almost everything around it got upgraded. The MKII gets a stiffer Monoforge one-piece upper machined in the style of the REPR MKII, a longer free-float M-LOK handguard that replaces the old proprietary rail, and an easier-to-reach gas adjustment key. The handguard also comes off by loosening just two screws, which makes piston maintenance much simpler than before.

Are piston ARs like the IC-MKII harder to clean than a regular AR-15?

They are easier, not harder. Because the piston vents gas at the front of the rifle instead of blowing it back into the receiver, the bolt carrier group stays cool and mostly free of carbon. Cleaning the receiver is usually just a quick wipe-down, and the nickel boron coated carrier releases what little fouling does build up without much scrubbing.

Does the LWRC IC-MKII come with sights and a magazine?

Yes. It ships with LWRC's own Skirmish flip-up back-up iron sights installed and one 30-round Magpul PMAG. The full-length top rail leaves plenty of room for a red dot or LPVO, so the sights work great as a backup or as your primary setup while you decide on glass.
