Plenty of companies have bolted together a 9mm AR. LWRC went a different route with the IC-9 and designed one from scratch. Instead of the heavy, clunky straight blowback action most pistol caliber ARs run, this one uses a chamber ring delayed blowback system, backed up by a hydraulic buffer and flat-wire spring. The result is a 9mm that runs smooth and flat without that harsh bolt slap you get from cheaper PCCs. At 5.1 pounds with an 8.5 inch barrel, it is a compact, quick-handling package that feels right at home indoors, in a truck, or on a fast-paced range stage.
The DNA here traces back to LWRCI's Individual Carbine rifles built for the U.S. Army's carbine program, and it shows. The MonoForge upper receiver has an integrated rail base that is lighter and stronger than standard forged uppers, and both receivers are double-coined forgings for tighter dimensional accuracy. Metal components get hard-coat anodizing, ferritic nitrocarburizing, and nickel-boron treatments, so this thing is built to shrug off wear. The Enhanced Fire Control Group is nickel-Teflon coated for a clean, crisp pull with a positive reset, and every control is fully ambidextrous, including the charging handle, safety, bolt catch, and mag release. Lefties get a real seat at the table here.
LWRC built the IC-9 around US-made Glock magazines, which means cheap, plentiful mags plus access to the huge aftermarket of extended sticks and drums. A 27 rounder comes in the box. The bolt locks back on an empty mag, something several competing 9mm carbines still skip. Up front, the nitride-treated barrel wears 1/2×28 threads, so spinning on a 9mm suppressor or tri-lug adapter is about as easy as it gets, and the free float M-LOK handguard leaves room for a light and hand stop. If you want a top-shelf 9mm in a truly compact package, this is the one to handle first.
