Description

Loading 50 BMG is a different animal than running a standard rifle press, and Hornady built this kit to handle that scale of work. The press frame is cast alloy and backed by a compound leverage system paired with a massive 1-1/2" ram, which gives you the strength to size those big cases and even swage bullets without fighting the handle. With seven inches of room between the top plate and the main frame, there's plenty of clearance to run the longest cartridges you'll feed it.

What Sets the Lock-N-Load 50 BMG Press Apart

The standout here is Hornady's Lock-N-Load technology built right into the ram. You can set up your shell holder for ram priming, then move it to the top plate, and once your holder and ram prime are dialed in they stay that way. Switching between priming and die use is a quick swap of the Lock-N-Load bushing, which cuts down on fuss when you're working through a batch. The press uses a 1-1/2" x 12 threaded die head, and the kit ships with the Custom Grade New Dimension 50 BMG die set made from select heat-treated steel.

Beyond 50 BMG with the Hornady 50 Cal Press Kit

This isn't a one-trick setup. The included conversion bushing adapts the die head to accept any standard 7/8" x 14 die, so with the optional shell head adapter you can load other centerfire cartridges on the same frame. That makes it a genuine workhorse for folks who want serious case-forming and swaging capability in one press.

A few things worth knowing before you set up: the press has three mounting holes and needs to be bolted down to a sturdy bench to perform its best, and mounting hardware isn't included, so plan on grabbing three bolts at least 5/16" in diameter. Get it anchored to a solid surface and it runs like a tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 50 BMG press kit come with everything I need to start loading?

The kit includes the press, the Custom Grade New Dimension 50 BMG die set, a 50 BMG shell holder, the ram prime system, and the conversion bushing. That covers the core gear to size, prime, and seat on the press itself. You'll still want to pick up the usual supporting items like a scale, case lube, and a way to trim brass, since 50 BMG cases benefit from proper prep.

Can the Hornady 50 BMG press load other calibers besides 50 BMG?

Yes. The press accepts a 1-1/2" x 12 threaded die head, and the included conversion bushing adapts it to take any standard 7/8" x 14 die. Add the optional shell head adapter and you can load other centerfire cartridges on the same frame, which is handy for long cartridges that need a lot of stroke.

Do I need to bolt this press down?

Definitely. The press has three mounting holes and is meant to be anchored to a solid workbench, which is where it really earns its keep when forming and sizing big cases. Mounting hardware isn't included, so plan on three bolts at least 5/16" in diameter long enough to reach through your bench with room for washers and nuts.

Is this press strong enough to swage bullets and form cases?

It is. The compound leverage system combined with the massive 1-1/2" ram gives you the mechanical advantage to form cases and swage bullets, not just seat and crimp. The cast alloy frame is built to take that kind of work over the long haul.
