The pencil profile is one of the oldest tricks in the AR world for a reason: strip the extra steel off the barrel, keep the length, and you end up with a rifle that points fast and carries easy. Lead & Steel built this 14.5" barrel around that idea, machining it from 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium steel and finishing it inside and out with QPQ black nitride. The result is a barrel that fights corrosion, cleans up quick, and trims ounces right where you feel them most, out at the front of the gun.
At the gas block journal you're looking at a .625" diameter, the classic pencil dimension that keeps things svelte compared to a heavier government or HBAR contour. That lighter contour shifts the balance rearward and makes the whole rifle feel more lively in the hands, which is exactly what you want on a patrol carbine, a truck gun, or any build where you're carrying it more than you're shooting from a bench. It's chambered in 5.56 NATO, so it'll happily run 5.56 or .223 Rem, and the 1:7 twist stabilizes the heavier bullet weights most folks are loading these days.
The mid-length gas system is the sweet spot for a 14.5" barrel. Yes. It uses a mil-spec M4 barrel extension and comes headspaced, so it drops into any standard AR-15 upper with a normal barrel nut and handguard. The 1/2×28 muzzle threads accept common flash hiders, compensators, and suppressor mounts. You'll just need to supply your own gas block, gas tube, and handguard to finish the build.
The pencil contour uses a .625" diameter at the gas block journal, so you'll want a gas block sized for that dimension. That's the standard measurement for pencil and lightweight barrels, and it's a common size that most manufacturers offer. Grab a low-profile .625" block if you're running a handguard over it.
A 1:7 twist is built to stabilize heavier projectiles, so it does well with 62 to 77 grain loads while still shooting lighter 55 grain ammo just fine. That makes it a versatile choice whether you're running bulk range ammo or heavier defensive and match rounds. It's the most flexible twist rate for a do-it-all 5.56 build.
