Description

If you've chased the last little bit of accuracy out of your .308 loads, you already know bullet seating is where a lot of it lives. This L.E. Wilson micrometer top seater is the chamber-type (also called inline or straight-line) design that benchrest shooters have leaned on for generations. Instead of threading into a press like a conventional die, the case and bullet are fully captured inside a chamber cut to match your cartridge, then the seater stem pushes the bullet straight down into perfect alignment. The result is some of the lowest runout you can get on a reloading bench.

The micrometer head is the big draw here. It lets you dial seating depth in .001" graduations with an easy-to-read scale, so finding your node and getting back to it is simple and repeatable. If you need to make a larger jump in seating depth, the 3/8"-24 TPI threads in the cap handle the coarse adjustment. Because the whole thing is compact, plenty of folks toss it in the range bag with an arbor press to test seating depth right on the line, which cuts out trips back and forth to the loading room.

Why the L.E. Wilson Inline Seater Earns Its Spot

This die is machined from solid bar stock using 416 and 303 stainless steel, so it holds its tolerances and shrugs off wear over years of use. The fit between the seater stem and the die body is tight enough to pull a slight vacuum, which tells you everything about how precisely these parts are made. During the seating stroke there's really only one moving part, which keeps things consistent load after load.

Running the 308 Win Micrometer Seater

This is a hand die, meaning it's designed for an arbor press or a mallet, not a conventional threaded press. It ships with the standard seater drift, which covers the vast majority of common .308 bullet profiles. It's a straightforward tool once it's set up, and it rewards careful handloaders with the kind of consistency that shows up on paper at distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Wilson 308 bullet seater work on a standard reloading press?

No, this is a hand die designed for use with an arbor press or a mallet. It does not thread into a conventional 7/8"-14 press like a typical seater die. If you don't already run an arbor press, you'll want to add one to use this seater.

What does the micrometer adjustment actually do on this seater?

The micrometer head lets you set bullet seating depth in precise .001" increments using an easy-to-read scale. That makes dialing in your overall cartridge length and returning to a proven setting quick and repeatable. For larger depth changes, the threaded cap handles the coarse adjustment.

Will this die handle VLD or long-nose bullets in .308?

This model ships with the standard seater drift, which fits most common .308 bullet shapes. If you load pointed VLD-style bullets, L.E. Wilson offers a separate VLD seater stem that contacts the bullet further down the ogive for better fit. The standard stem covers the majority of typical .308 loads.

Why choose a chamber-type seater over a regular threaded seating die?

A chamber-type design fully captures both the case and the bullet before the stem pushes the bullet straight down, so everything stays in alignment through the seating stroke. That setup produces very low runout and consistent concentricity, which is why it's a favorite among benchrest and precision shooters. It's one of the most accurate seating methods available on the bench.
