There is something special about a compensated 1911 in .38 Super. The cartridge was practically made for this setup, running fast and flat with enough gas to make a comp genuinely work. Kimber leaned into that with the Rampart, fitting a patent-pending compensator up front that takes down without tools, plus a ported channel cut into the top strap just forward of the ejection port. Between the two, muzzle rise gets knocked down considerably, and the recoil impulse feels more like a push than a snap. Follow-up shots come quick, and that is the whole point of a gun like this.
The Rampart starts with a stainless steel slide and frame, then adds a 5-inch stainless match-grade barrel finished in Black DLC for wear resistance and a clean look against the custom OD Green Cerakote. Slide lightening cuts trim reciprocating mass, and the racing-style rear serrations give you real purchase whether you are press-checking or running the slide in a hurry. Engraved Kimber and Rampart logos on the slide add a custom-shop touch you notice every time you pick it up. At 40.25 ounces with an empty magazine, this is a full-size steel gun that soaks up what little recoil the comp leaves behind.
HIVIZ fiber optic sights pull your eye to the front post in just about any light, and the ambidextrous thumb safety works for lefties or anyone who trains support-hand. Black Lok custom Boggy G10 grips lock your hand in place without chewing it up, and the aluminum trigger breaks the way a proper 1911 trigger should. Capacity is 9+1 of .38 Super, which is one of the perks of running this classic high-pressure cartridge in a single stack.
This one makes sense for 1911 fans who want a soft-shooting range gun with some race-gun DNA, steel challenge and pin shooters, or anyone who has always wanted a .38 Super done right. It is a distinctive pistol in a chambering that deserves more attention than it gets.
No, and that is one of its best tricks. The Rampart uses Kimber's patent-pending bushing-mount compensator with toolless takedown, so you can strip the gun for cleaning without hunting down wrenches. It reinstalls just as easily and goes right back to work cutting muzzle rise.
The .38 Super runs at higher velocity and produces more gas than standard 9mm, which makes the compensator work even harder for you. It has a long history in competition 1911s precisely because it shoots so flat. Capacity is the same 9+1 as the 9mm version, so you are not giving anything up there.
The Rampart has a ported channel cut into the top strap just forward of the ejection port. It works with the compensator to vent gases upward, which helps push the muzzle down during recoil. Combined with the slide lightening cuts, the whole system is aimed at keeping the sights level through fast strings of fire.
It is friendlier than most 1911s. The Rampart comes standard with an ambidextrous thumb safety, so lefties can run it without modification. The magazine release is still in the standard right-hand position, but the grip safety and controls otherwise work fine from either side.
