KDS9c stands for Kimber Double-Stack 9mm Compact, and the Rail version is the fully loaded iteration of that platform. This is a hammer-fired, single-action pistol built on 1911 bones but engineered from scratch around a double-stack 9mm magazine. The result is something that shoots like a 1911 but carries a whole lot more ammunition, all in a package sized close to a Glock 19.
The frame is machined from 7075 aerospace-grade aluminum with a KimPro Black finish and wrapped in gray and black crosshatch-cut G-10 grips. The front strap features the same crosshatch texture, with a high undercut on the trigger guard so you can get your hand as high on the frame as possible. That grip geometry, combined with the rounded bobtail butt, keeps the gun manageable and snag-resistant. The stainless steel slide is fitted with both front and rear cocking serrations, so racking, press-checking, or running a malfunction drill from any angle is never a problem.
The 4.09-inch stainless barrel is fully fluted, crowned, and ramped. Kimber runs every barrel through their proprietary bore-sizing process, which tightens tolerances enough to deliver genuine match-grade accuracy on a carry pistol. Multiple reviewers have reported outstanding precision at defensive distances with zero malfunctions, and the flat-faced, skeletonized trigger with its 3.5 to 4.5 lb pull is a big reason why. The break is clean, the reset is short and tactile, and it feels like what it is: a classic 1911 fire-control group.
The Picatinny rail on the dust cover is what separates the Rail from the base model, giving you the ability to mount a weapon light or laser. The optics-ready slide comes with a dovetailed TruGlo night sight plate installed, and adapter plates are available for RMSc/Holosun K, Trijicon RMR, and Docter footprints if you want to run a red dot. The ambidextrous thumb safety and reversible magazine release round out the controls, making this pistol genuinely usable for both right- and left-handed shooters.
It is 2011-inspired but not a traditional 2011. The KDS9c Rail uses a proprietary Kimber double-stack magazine rather than standard 2011 magazines. That said, the trigger, hammer, sear, and thumb safety are all genuine 1911 parts, so the feel and function of the fire-control group is essentially the same. Think of it as a purpose-built carry pistol that borrows the best of the 1911 design while adapting it for higher capacity.
The slide is cut and comes with a cover plate that doubles as the rear night sight mount. Kimber offers adapter plates for RMSc/Holosun K, Trijicon RMR, and Docter footprints. The iron sights are tall enough to co-witness through a mounted optic, which is a nice bonus for a backup aiming solution.
The two are very close in overall footprint, which is part of why the KDS9c Rail gets so much attention as a carry option. At 7.75 inches long and 5.35 inches tall, it fits the same general size category as a Glock 19, though it does carry a bit more weight due to the aluminum frame and rail. Most people find that extra weight helps tame recoil.
Yes. The Rail model ships with TruGlo night sights installed in the dovetail on the optic cover plate. If you swap to a red dot, you will swap out that plate, but the included irons give you a solid out-of-the-box setup with no additional purchase required.
The Rail version was specifically designed with ambidextrous controls, which is one of the key upgrades over the base KDS9c. The thumb safety is ambidextrous and the magazine release is reversible, so left-handed users can configure it to fit their natural grip without compromise.
The box includes two magazines: one flush-fitting 15-round magazine and one extended 18-round magazine. Both are steel with an epoxy coating and polymer followers. The 15-rounder sits flush with the grip for a cleaner carry profile, while the 18-rounder gives you a slightly extended basepad and more capacity when you need it.
