The double stack 1911 market has been dominated by 9mm for years, so when Kimber built the 2K11 Target in .45 ACP, plenty of folks took notice. This is the classic big-bore 1911 experience with the capacity problem solved: 13+1 rounds on tap and three magazines in the case. At 40 ounces with a stainless steel slide riding on an SST steel sub-frame, it soaks up .45 recoil the way a full-size steel gun should, and the two-tone look with the brush polished Coyote PVD slide over the black DLC frame stands out on any bench.
The barrel is where this pistol earns its Target name. It's a fluted, ramped stainless bull barrel with 5R rifling in a 1:16 twist, deep crowned and polished with a DLC finish. Behind it sits Kimber's GT Match Grade aluminum trigger with a 3 to 4 pound pull that breaks clean and resets the same way every time. The patent-pending tool-less guide rod makes takedown simpler than most bull barrel 2011-style guns, which is a small detail you'll appreciate every cleaning session. An external extractor rounds out the reliability side of the equation.
Up top you get a red TAG FiberLok 2 fiber optic front paired with an adjustable rear built into the SST cover plate, so the iron sights are legitimately usable, not an afterthought. When you're ready for a dot, the slide is cut for C&H Precision adapter plates and an RMR-footprint plate comes in the box, covering popular Trijicon and Holosun options. The aluminum grip module wears Type III hardcoat anodizing and a genuine Stan Chen Customs magwell that funnels reloads home fast, while the tapered magwell design on the sub-frame stabilizes the magazine during cycling. Add the ambidextrous thumb safety and a Picatinny rail for a light, and you've got a 2011-style .45 that's ready for match day or the nightstand without touching a gunsmith's bench.
The slide uses C&H Precision adapter plates, and an RMR-footprint plate comes in the box, which covers the Trijicon RMR and Holosun 507C style optics. Additional plates for footprints like RMSc, DeltaPoint Pro, ACRO, and 509T are sold separately through C&H. If you'd rather run irons, the fiber optic front and adjustable rear are solid on their own.
This model ships with three 13-round magazines, which is a nice touch since spare double stack 1911 mags aren't cheap. That gives you 13+1 capacity loaded, a big jump over the 8 rounds you get from a traditional single stack .45 1911.
It follows the same basic recipe: a steel sub-frame carrying the fire controls mated to a separate grip module, in this case aluminum rather than polymer. Kimber added their own touches like the patent-pending tool-less guide rod, an external extractor, and a factory-installed Stan Chen Customs magwell. It handles and shoots like a double stack 1911 should, just with Kimber's build quality behind it.
At 40 ounces with a 5-inch bull barrel, it's really at home in competition, range work, and home defense duty. The weight tames .45 ACP recoil nicely and the 3 to 4 pound GT Match trigger rewards precise shooting. It's a lot of gun for daily carry, though the Picatinny rail and optics-ready slide make it a strong nightstand pick.
