Description

There is a reason the Crickett has earned its reputation as "My First Rifle." Keystone builds these little bolt guns specifically for kids, not as scaled-down afterthoughts, and this .22 WMR version brings a bit more punch to the formula than the standard .22 LR models. With a 16.125 inch blued barrel, an overall length of just 30 inches, and a weight under 3 pounds, it fits small-framed beginners the way a full-size rifle never will. The 11.5 inch length of pull is the real difference maker here, letting a young shooter get a proper cheek weld and sight picture instead of stretching for a stock built for an adult.

Built Around Safe, Deliberate Shooting

The Crickett runs on a manual-cocking, single shot bolt action. Load one round, close the bolt, then pull the cocking knob back when you are ready to fire. That extra step works a lot like a revolver hammer and gives a parent or instructor a clear checkpoint on every shot. A rebounding firing pin adds another layer of protection against unintentional discharge, and the one-at-a-time capacity naturally slows things down so good habits stick.

Sights, Optics, and That Break-Up Camo

Out of the box you get a fixed front post and an adjustable rear peep sight, a great setup for teaching sight alignment fundamentals. When your young hunter is ready for glass, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for Crickett scope mounts, and a scope base ships with the rifle. The synthetic Mossy Oak Break-Up stock shrugs off weather and rough handling while looking right at home in a squirrel woods or on a varmint patrol around the farm.

Why the Crickett .22 WMR Makes Sense

The .22 Magnum chambering extends this rifle beyond the plinking stage, giving it enough reach and energy for rabbits, squirrels, and pest control at practical distances. Keystone builds these rifles in the USA and backs them with a lifetime warranty, so a Crickett often ends up passed from one kid in the family to the next. As first rifles go, this one checks all the right boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Keystone Crickett .22 WMR also shoot .22 LR ammo?

No, and this trips up a lot of first-time buyers. The .22 WMR chamber is longer and slightly larger in diameter than .22 LR, so Long Rifle rounds will not fire safely or reliably in this rifle. Stick strictly with .22 WMR (also sold as .22 Magnum) ammunition. If you want a Crickett that runs cheaper .22 LR, Keystone makes those as separate models.

How does the manual cocking system work on the Crickett?

After you load a round and close the bolt, the rifle still will not fire until you pull the cocking knob at the rear of the bolt. It works a lot like cocking the hammer on a revolver. This gives new shooters a clear, deliberate final step before every shot and lets a supervising adult control exactly when the rifle goes hot. Combined with the rebounding firing pin, it is one of the better safety setups you will find on a youth rifle.

Can I mount a scope on the Crickett .22 WMR?

Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped for Crickett scope mounts, and a scope base is included with the rifle. Many families start their kids on the factory peep sights to build fundamentals, then add a compact rimfire scope once the basics click. Keystone also sells scope packages and rings designed specifically for these rifles.

What age or size shooter is the Crickett designed for?

The 11.5 inch length of pull and sub-3-pound weight are sized for roughly ages 5 to 12, depending on the kid's build. Most full-size rifles run a 13.5 to 14 inch length of pull, so the shorter stock lets small shooters mount the rifle correctly instead of fighting it. Plenty of adults also grab these as lightweight pack or truck rifles because they are so compact.
