Keystone Sporting Arms has been building Crickett rifles in central Pennsylvania since 1996, and there is a reason so many folks learned to shoot on one. This version, model KSA2449, takes the familiar single shot .22 LR platform and dresses it up with a heavy profile 16.125 inch blued barrel and a custom wood stock. The result is a little rifle that feels more planted than the featherweight synthetic models. That extra weight up front does real work, soaking up wobble and helping a new shooter hold steady through the trigger press instead of chasing the target around.
The single shot, manual cocking bolt action is the heart of what makes a Crickett such a smart trainer. Load one round on the EZ Loader feed ramp, close the bolt, cock it when you are ready, and take your shot. Every step is deliberate, which builds good habits fast. The rebounding firing pin stays blocked until the action is cocked, and the whole process keeps a young shooter thinking about what they are doing rather than how fast they can do it. At about 4.75 pounds and 31.5 inches overall, it is scaled for smaller frames without feeling like a toy.
The receiver comes drilled and tapped for Crickett scope mounts, so when open sight work turns into a request for a scope, you will not need a gunsmith to make it happen. A compact rimfire optic on top of that heavy barrel turns this into a tidy little tack driver for soda cans, paper, and the occasional garden pest.
The custom wood stock gives this one a traditional look that the synthetic versions just cannot match, and it holds up to the dings and scratches that come with learning. These rifles tend to stick around in families, moving from one kid to the next. If you are shopping for a first rifle that will still be earning its keep years from now, this is a strong way to go.
It is one of the best options out there for exactly that. The manual cocking single shot action forces a deliberate pace, the rebounding firing pin stays blocked until the rifle is cocked, and the short overall length fits smaller shooters. The heavy barrel adds a bit of steadying weight that helps new marksmen hold on target.
Yes, the receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory. Pick up a Crickett scope mount or compatible base and you can run a compact rimfire scope with no gunsmithing required. It is a popular upgrade once a young shooter gets the basics down with iron sights.
The core action is the same proven single shot design, but this version wears a thicker heavy profile 16.125 inch barrel and a custom wood stock instead of the standard slim barrel and basic stock. The added weight, around 4.75 pounds total, makes the rifle noticeably steadier on target. It also gives the gun a more grown up look and feel.
It is chambered for standard .22 Long Rifle ammunition, which is affordable and easy to find. Since it is a single shot, you load one round at a time using the EZ Loader feed ramp, so it runs fine with just about any .22 LR load from quiet standard velocity target rounds to high velocity hunting ammo.
