There is something satisfying about a .22 bolt gun done the old fashioned way, with real walnut and blued steel instead of plastic and paint. That is exactly what Keystone built with the Model 722 Compact. The deluxe checkered American walnut stock wears a satin finish and a raised cheek piece that lines your eye up naturally behind the sights, and the whole rifle weighs right around four pounds, so it carries easy and shoulders even easier.
The 722 Compact fills a gap most rifle makers ignore. Keystone designed it for kids who have outgrown their first Crickett but are not ready for a full-size stock, and for smaller-framed adults who never fit one to begin with. The 12-3/8 inch length of pull splits the difference between youth and adult dimensions, which means proper cheek weld and eye relief instead of stretching or scrunching to make a rifle work. It feeds from a detachable 7-round magazine with stainless steel feed lips that snaps in securely, and the short 5 inch receiver only needs 1.6 inches of bolt travel with a 50 degree cock-on-open throw. Quick to cycle, easy to run from the shoulder.
Plenty of budget rimfires come with heavy, gritty triggers. Not this one. The 722 breaks at a light two pounds, which makes a real difference when you are teaching fundamentals or squeezing off shots at squirrels past 50 yards. The 16.25 inch blued barrel is precision button rifled, and Keystone stands behind the whole 722 line with an MOA accuracy guarantee and a limited lifetime warranty.
Out of the box you get an adjustable rear notch sight paired with a fixed front post, a great setup for learning iron sight fundamentals. When you are ready for glass, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for Keystone's Picatinny rail kit, sold separately, so mounting a compact rimfire scope is a quick job. First rifle for a growing kid or a lightweight walnut trainer for yourself, the 722 Compact earns its spot in the safe.
Keystone built the 722 Compact as an intermediate rifle, sitting between their youth Crickett and a full-size adult gun. The 12-3/8 inch length of pull suits kids who have outgrown a first rifle as well as smaller-framed adults. At around four pounds, it is easy for just about anyone to handle and carry.
Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped for Keystone's Model 722 Picatinny rail kit, which is sold separately. Once the rail is on, any standard rimfire scope with Picatinny rings will mount right up. Until then, the adjustable rear and fixed front post sights work well for iron sight shooting.
Keystone backs the entire 722 line with an MOA accuracy guarantee, thanks to the precision button-rifled barrel and a light two pound trigger. With quality ammo it matched to your rifle, it is fully capable of tight groups at typical rimfire distances. Owners regularly report it shoots well above what you would expect at this size and weight.
It feeds from a detachable 7-round snap-lock magazine with stainless steel feed lips, and one comes with the rifle. Keystone sells spare Model 722 magazines separately, so picking up an extra or two for range days is easy.
