The SUB2000 has been the go-to folding pistol caliber carbine since 2001, and the Gen 3 fixes the one gripe everybody had with the older models. The new rotating forend lets you twist and fold the carbine with a red dot still mounted, so you no longer have to choose between an optic and the folding party trick that made this gun famous in the first place. Press the release button, twist the forend either direction, and the whole thing folds down to roughly 16 inches for a range bag, backpack, or truck safe.
Here is where this particular model earns its keep. Instead of being locked into one magazine pattern, the Multi Mag configuration comes with seven interchangeable magazine catches, letting you set the carbine up to feed from the double-stack 9mm pistol mags you already have on hand. Swapping a catch takes a couple of screws and a few minutes, and it means this one carbine can pair with just about whatever sits in your nightstand. A 15-round magazine comes in the box to get you started.
KelTec did more than fix the folding issue. The Gen 3 gets an aluminum trigger with a lighter, crisper pull in the 5 pound range, an ambidextrous bolt hold-open, and a redesigned charging handle with a lightened action that makes racking the blowback bolt noticeably easier. There is also a chamber indicator peephole on top so you can see brass at a glance. The M-LOK handguard with Picatinny rail up top gives you plenty of real estate for lights and optics, and the 16.1 inch barrel wears 1/2×28 threads under a knurled protector if you want to add a muzzle device or suppressor.
At just over 4 pounds unloaded with an adjustable 3-position stock, this thing carries easy and shoots even easier. Recoil is soft, 9mm ammo is cheap and everywhere, and the green furniture looks sharp against the black metalwork. It disassembles without tools for cleaning, making it a simple carbine to live with.

The rotating forend lets you press the release button, twist the forend in either direction, and fold the carbine in half without removing your red dot. Older generations folded right over the top rail, so this fixes the biggest complaint about the platform.
It is. The 16.1 inch barrel comes with a standard 1/2×28 threaded muzzle and includes a knurled thread protector. That thread pitch covers most common 9mm suppressors and muzzle devices, and the blowback 9mm action makes this a popular host for a can.
Standard brass-cased 9mm FMJ and most defensive hollow points run reliably through the blowback action. KelTec advises against aluminum-cased ammunition in this carbine, so stick with brass. The 16 inch barrel also squeezes extra velocity out of typical 9mm loads compared to a pistol.
