The SUB-2000 has been the go-to folding pistol caliber carbine for years, and the Defender package takes the Gen 3 and dresses it out so you can skip the accessory shopping trip. From the factory you get a Viridian RFX11 green dot optic, Magpul flip-up front and rear sights for backup, a Magpul vertical grip up front, a Missouri tactical butt pad, and a brass-colored bolt that gives it a look you won't mistake for the base model. Bolt on nothing, zero the dot, and go.
The biggest gripe with earlier SUB-2000s was simple: mount an optic and the gun wouldn't fold anymore. The Gen 3 solved that with a rotating forend. Press the release, twist the forend, and the whole front half folds back with your optic still attached and still zeroed. That matters even more on the Defender since the RFX11 comes with the package. Folded, the whole carbine tucks down to right around 16 inches, which means it disappears into a backpack, range bag, or behind the seat of a truck. Gen 3 also brought an aluminum trigger with a lighter pull around 5 pounds, an ambidextrous bolt hold-open, and a redesigned charging handle that's easier to run.
The 16.15 inch barrel wrings noticeably more velocity out of standard 9mm loads than any pistol will, and it's threaded 1/2×28 if you want to add a muzzle device or suppressor. The straight blowback action is about as simple as a semi-auto gets, and the whole carbine weighs in the neighborhood of 4.25 pounds unloaded. M-LOK slots and Picatinny rail space give you room for a light or sling mounts.
This configuration runs Glock 17 and 19 pattern 9mm magazines and ships with one 15-round mag. If you already keep a Glock 9mm around, sharing ammo and magazines between your pistol and this carbine is a genuinely practical setup, and double-stack Glock mags are cheap and everywhere. Low recoil and a shoulder-fired platform make this an easy gun for just about anyone in the household to shoot well.
This model runs double-stack Glock 9mm magazines, from the Glock 19 size on up. It ships with one 15-round mag, and larger Glock 17 and extended mags work too. If you already own a 9mm Glock, everything you have on hand feeds this carbine.
