Instead of a swap-out box magazine, this 5.7x28mm pistol loads through the top of the grip using stripper clips, a system borrowed from old military rifles and almost never seen on a modern handgun. The payoff for going this route is real: the PR-5.7 tips the scale at under 14 ounces unloaded and stays under an inch wide, all while packing 20 rounds plus one in the pipe.
Ditching a detachable magazine let KelTec build the frame around the ammunition instead of around a mag well, which is why the grip on this gun stays so thin. Two included 10-round stripper clips slide into the oversized ejection port and let you push a full row of ammo into the internal magazine in a couple of seconds, or you can thumb rounds in one at a time if you would rather take it slow. Underneath the slide sits a rotary barrel riding on dual guide rods, a design that trims weight and tames muzzle rise more than you would expect from a cartridge already known for being mild mannered.

Field stripping might be the most unusual party trick this pistol has. There is no takedown pin or lever to hunt for, you simply hook a finger behind the trigger and push forward to release the slide from the frame. It is a quick process that gets you into the barrel and recoil assembly for cleaning without any extra tools, which fits the whole minimalist theme KelTec was clearly going for with this design.
