The Kel-Tec PLR-16 is one of those guns that makes people stop and stare on the firing line. It looks like someone removed the stock from an AR pistol and forgot to put it back, but that's actually the whole point. By ditching the buffer tube entirely, Kel-Tec was able to build a much more compact package around the same proven Johnson/Stoner rotating bolt and long-stroke gas piston system that AR-platform fans already trust. The result is an 18.5" overall length pistol throwing a genuine 5.56 NATO round, coming in under 3.5 lbs unloaded.
Most AR pistols still have that buffer tube extending behind the grip, which limits how short they can actually get. The PLR-16 skips that entirely, which gives it a cleaner profile and genuinely better handling balance. The frame and receiver are built from glass fiber reinforced Zytel polymer, with steel reserved for the barrel, bolt, and mechanism where it counts. The barrel runs a 1:9 right-hand twist and is threaded 1/2×28 TPI, so muzzle devices that fit your AR will mount right up. An ambidextrous pushbolt safety and a magazine well positioned forward of the trigger group round out the controls.
The factory irons are functional and familiar: an M-16 style post up front, adjustable for elevation, and a windage-adjustable rear. The integrated MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail molded into the top of the receiver is a natural home for a compact red dot, which opens up the PLR-16 considerably for any kind of precision work. It ships with a 10-round magazine, but the real convenience is full compatibility with any standard STANAG/AR-15 magazine you already own, from flush 10-rounders to 30-round PMAGs.
Kel-Tec designed the PLR-16 from the start as a long-range target and hunting pistol, and it genuinely earns that purpose. Muzzle velocity out of the 9.2" barrel runs in the neighborhood of 2,400 to 2,600 fps with standard M193, which is still significantly more energy than any conventional handgun round. Yes, the PLR-16 is fully compatible with standard STANAG AR-15 and M-16 magazines, including popular options like Magpul PMAGs. It ships with a flush-fit 10-round magazine, but you can run any capacity AR-15 mag you already own. The magazine well sits forward of the trigger group, similar in principle to a bullpup layout.
Expect roughly 2,400 to 2,600 fps with standard M193 5.56 NATO loads, compared to around 3,000+ fps from a full 16" rifle barrel. That's a meaningful velocity reduction, but still dramatically more energy than a traditional pistol cartridge. For varmint hunting or range shooting, the performance is more than adequate at typical pistol engagement distances.
The barrel is threaded 1/2×28 TPI, which is the standard AR-15 thread pattern. Kel-Tec does not recommend using a suppressor with the PLR-16 due to the gas system and barrel length, though the threads will accept a flash hider, muzzle brake, or compensator without issue. A Kel-Tec-specific muzzle brake is available as an optional accessory and is optimized for the PLR-16's 9.2" barrel length.
Kel-Tec redesigned the operating system so the PLR-16 doesn't rely on the traditional AR-15 buffer and buffer tube. That omission is what makes the pistol so compact relative to its barrel length and contributes significantly to the sub-3.5 lb weight. It's one of the genuine engineering differences that sets the PLR-16 apart from most AR-pattern pistols on the market.
The PLR-16 has an integrated MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail molded directly into the top of the receiver, so any optic that mounts to a standard Picatinny rail will work. Compact red dots are a popular choice and pair naturally with the pistol's size. Standard AR-15 scope rings also fit if you prefer a low-power variable.
The long-stroke gas piston system is generally regarded as one of the more reliable AR-pattern operating systems, running cleaner than direct impingement under extended use. The PLR-16 feeds reliably with standard pressure 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem ammunition. Subsonic loads will not generate enough gas pressure to cycle the action, so stick to standard velocity or higher for reliable semi-auto function.
