Bullpup shotguns tend to divide people until they pick one up, and the KS7 does a lot of the convincing on its own. By moving the action behind the grip, KelTec fits a full 18.5 inch barrel into a package that measures just 26.1 inches from end to end and weighs 6.8 pounds empty. That is shorter than most youth model pumps, yet you give up nothing in barrel length or payload. The single tube holds 6+1 with 3 inch shells or 7+1 with 2.75 inch loads, and the downward ejection means spent hulls drop straight out of the way whether you shoulder it right or left handed.
The second generation addresses the two biggest requests from original KS7 owners. There is now a flat, continuous Picatinny rail up top for optics, plus a 5 slot rail section built into the redesigned forend for a vertical grip, light, or whatever else you want down there. A flush fit cap keeps the forend clean if you leave the rail empty. KelTec also smoothed out the pump stroke, so cycling feels noticeably more refined than the first generation.
The Defender version takes the guesswork out of setup. From the factory you get a Vortex Crossfire green dot mounted up top, Magpul MBUS flip up sights as backup, a Magpul RVG vertical grip on the forend rail, an extended recoil pad that takes real bite out of 12 gauge recoil, and a high visibility anodized aluminum magazine follower so you can confirm the tube is empty at a glance. Buying those pieces separately and mounting everything yourself adds up fast, and here it all comes dialed in on one gun.
This one makes the most sense for home defense, truck or cabin duty, and backcountry carry where a full size shotgun is just too much gun to maneuver. The cylinder bore barrel and 3 inch chamber handle everything from light target loads to buckshot and slugs, so range practice with the same gun you keep by the bed is simple. Compact, ambidextrous, and set up right from the start, it is a smart pick for anyone who wants serious 12 gauge capability in the smallest practical footprint.
The Defender is the fully accessorized version. The standard model gives you the bare gun and rails so you can build it out yourself.
The single magazine tube holds six 3 inch shells or seven 2.75 inch shells, plus one in the chamber. That gives you 6+1 or 7+1 depending on the loads you run. The high-visibility aluminum follower included on the Defender makes it easy to see when the tube is empty.
Yes. The KS7 ejects spent shells straight down instead of out the side, so it runs the same from either shoulder. Combined with the centered controls and bullpup layout, it is a genuinely ambidextrous shotgun.
A 6.8 pound 12 gauge will let you know it is there, but the Defender's extended recoil pad and the included vertical grip both help you manage it well. The bullpup layout also puts the weight back over your grip, which keeps the muzzle steady between shots. Running reduced recoil defensive loads is a popular option if you want a softer shooting setup.
