There are plenty of .22 rifles out there, but the KelTec SU22CA does its own thing. It borrows its layout from the SU16 family, yet it is a dedicated .22 LR from the ground up rather than a conversion kit bolted onto something else. That means a proper blowback action with a 4140 steel bolt riding on steel guide rails inside the lightweight polymer receiver, with the recoil spring tucked above the barrel. The result is a full-size rifle that weighs right around 4 pounds, which is easy to hand to a new shooter or stash behind the seat of the truck.
The SU22CA ships with usable sights from day one. The rear is adjustable for windage and the front handles elevation, so you can dial in your zero without buying anything extra. When you are ready to upgrade, the integrated Picatinny rail on top takes red dots, scopes, whatever you like, and the compact forend adds a rail section for a light or bipod. The 16.1 inch barrel is threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle, so standard rimfire muzzle devices spin right on.
Capacity is where this rifle earns its keep at the range. The included semi-transparent 26-round magazine keeps you shooting longer between reloads, and the SU22 platform accepts most AR-22 pattern mags, so spares are easy to come by.
