There is something satisfying about shouldering a Tavor X95 for the first time. You get a full 16.5-inch barrel with all the velocity that comes with it, but the whole rifle measures just 26.125 inches from muzzle to buttpad. That is the whole point of the bullpup layout, and IWI does it better than just about anyone. The action sits behind the trigger inside a reinforced polymer chassis, so the balance rests back against your shoulder instead of hanging out front. It makes the 7.9-pound weight feel lighter than the number suggests, especially when you are moving with it or holding on target.
The X95 took everything people liked about the original Tavor SAR and refined it. The fire control pack brings the trigger down to a 5 to 6 pound pull, the ambidextrous mag release moved to the familiar AR-15 spot, and the charging handle sits closer to your centerline for faster manipulation. The forearm carries Picatinny rails at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock under removable covers, and the full-length top rail houses folding backup irons with a tritium front post. The modular grip can even be swapped for a standard pistol grip with a traditional trigger guard if that is more your speed.
Under the hood you get a closed rotating bolt and long stroke gas piston system, the same basic operating principle that has kept AKs running in every climate on earth. The cold hammer forged CrMoV barrel is chrome-lined, spun with a 1:7 twist that stabilizes everything from light varmint loads to heavy 77-grain match ammo, and threaded 1/2×28 for your choice of muzzle device or suppressor.
This version ships with a single 10-round PMAG Gen 3, and since the rifle runs on standard STANAG-pattern magazines, feeding it is as easy as it gets. If you have AR mags on the shelf already, they will work here. It is a compact, tough, thoroughly proven carbine that earns its reputation every time you take it out.
Yes. The X95 feeds from STANAG-pattern magazines, so standard AR-15 mags like PMAGs and aluminum GI mags run just fine. This model ships from the factory with one 10-round PMAG Gen 3.
The 16.5-inch barrel comes threaded 1/2×28, which is the standard thread pitch for 5.56 muzzle devices and suppressor mounts. The long stroke gas piston system also tends to run cleaner suppressed than direct impingement rifles, since less gas gets blown back toward your face.
This was one of the biggest upgrades IWI made. The X95 uses a redesigned fire control pack with a 5 to 6 pound pull, a big improvement over the heavier trigger in the original SAR. It is a very usable trigger for a bullpup right out of the box, and aftermarket packs are available if you want to go lighter.
It comes with folding backup iron sights built into the full-length top Picatinny rail, including a front post with a tritium insert for low light. You can run the irons alone or fold them flat and mount a red dot, LPVO, or whatever optic suits how you plan to use the rifle.
