The Galil ACE lineage traces back to the original IMI Galil developed for the Israeli Defense Forces in the late 1960s, a design that drew from the AK-47's proven long-stroke gas piston system and the Finnish Valmet RK 62's accuracy-focused engineering. The Gen II version represents decades of real-world refinement, and the GAP28SB pistol puts all of that into a 13-inch package chambered in 5.56 NATO.
At the core of this pistol is a milled steel upper receiver, which gives it a structural rigidity you simply don't get from stamped alternatives. Paired with that is a long-stroke gas piston operating system that keeps carbon and heat away from the bolt carrier group, resulting in a softer-shooting, more consistent cycling action that holds up under sustained fire. The 5.56 NATO version of the Galil ACE Gen II uses standard M4/AR-15 compatible magazines, so your existing PMAG or mil-spec aluminum mags will drop right in. It ships with one 30-round Magpul PMAG. Because this firearm is assembled in the US under 922(r) compliance, you should stick with US-made magazines.
The Gen II brings several tangible upgrades over the original ACE: a full-length two-piece Picatinny top rail (the Gen I had a shorter, interrupted rail), a free-float M-LOK handguard, an updated trigger profile, and a shorter safety selector throw that sits in a more ergonomically natural position. Yes, and it's one of the standout features of the Gen II specifically. The full-length 18-inch two-piece Picatinny top rail runs the entire length of the receiver and gives you plenty of real estate for a red dot, LPVO, or magnifier setup. IWI also engineered the top cover to lock down tightly so that optic zero is maintained even when the cover is removed for cleaning and reinstalled.
The long-stroke gas piston system moves the piston, rod, and bolt carrier as one combined unit, which keeps hot carbon fouling away from the bolt and chamber. In practice this means the gun tends to run reliably even when it gets dirty or runs a bit dry, and it produces a softer, more push-back recoil impulse compared to a direct impingement AR. The tradeoff is a bit more weight from the reciprocating mass, but many people find the shooting feel noticeably smoother.
The GAP28SB ships with an SB Tactical SBA-3 pistol stabilizing brace, which folds to the left side of the receiver. The folding mechanism uses an AR-15 receiver extension-compatible design, and the firearm can be operated with the brace folded if needed. When deployed, the SBA-3 is adjustable to five positions, so you can dial in the fit.
Field stripping follows a process familiar to anyone who has taken down an AK-pattern firearm, with the gas tube sliding rearward out from under the M-LOK rail and the top cover releasing via the rear recoil spring button. One thing worth knowing is that the top cover fits very tightly by design to maintain optic zero, so it takes a little more effort to remove than a standard AK. Once you get the rhythm down, it's not a difficult gun to maintain.
