Keeping Traditions Alive Since 1953

The .38-40 Winchester has a long pedigree in American shooting, and HSM's Cowboy Action line keeps that tradition alive with ammunition built specifically for period-correct firearms and competitive matches. This load pairs a 180-grain soft lead round nose flat point bullet with reloadable brass cases, giving you practical accuracy and the feel that matches the guns these cartridges were designed for.
Most cowboy action loads run in the 800 fps range, but HSM pushes this one to 930 fps with 346 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. That extra velocity doesn't mean excessive recoil—the load is still mild enough for vintage rifles and single-action revolvers—but it gives you noticeably flatter trajectory and more consistent shot placement than lighter target loads. The soft lead bullet expands properly at these velocities while maintaining the traditional round nose flat point profile that functions reliably in tube-feed magazines and revolver cylinders.
This ammunition cycles smoothly in Winchester Model 1892s, Marlin 1894s, and compatible single-action revolvers. The round nose flat point design prevents feeding issues and reduces the potential for primer cratering that can happen with blunt-nose alternatives. Brass cases are clearly marked as reloadable, so if you're into handloading, you can stretch the life of each case multiple times over.
Hunting Shack Munitions has been producing ammunition since 1968 and built their reputation on precision manufacturing and quality control. The Cowboy Action line reflects that commitment—each round is loaded to consistent specifications, and shooters have reported impressive accuracy from period firearms. Whether you're running a formal SASS match or spending a weekend at the range with your favorite vintage rifle, this ammunition delivers the reliability you'd expect from a factory-loaded product.
This load is designed for classic lever-action rifles like the Winchester Model 1873 and 1892, Marlin 1894, and compatible single-action revolvers. The round nose flat point profile feeds reliably from tube magazines and revolver cylinders. While the load is mild enough for vintage firearms, verify your specific gun's chamber and condition before use.
Most traditional cowboy action ammunition loads in the 700-850 fps range for lighter recoil, but HSM's 930 fps load sits in a sweet spot. You get noticeably flatter trajectory and more energy downrange without excessive recoil for vintage firearms. This makes it practical for both competition and field use where the extra velocity helps with accuracy.
Yes, the brass is clearly marked as reloadable. The .38-40 does require some attention when handloading due to thin case mouths, but properly trimmed and processed cases can be reloaded multiple times. Standard reloading manuals have load data for this cartridge, though most list it in the pistol section rather than rifle.
The .38-40 Winchester is best suited for smaller game like coyotes and similar-sized animals, not larger game. It works well for target practice, competition, and recreational shooting. If you're considering hunting, verify your local game laws and the specific game you're pursuing to ensure this cartridge meets minimum power requirements.
