The Hornady Custom Lite slug delivers what a lot of people are looking for: genuine reduced recoil that doesn't feel like you're making a tradeoff. Running at 1,575 fps, these 300-grain FTX projectiles pack about 40% less felt recoil than standard 12-gauge slug loads while staying effective enough for deer-sized game out to 150 yards.
Hornady kept the same proven 300-grain FTX bullet from their higher-velocity SST slug line but paired it with modified propellants and slightly reduced powder charges. That's the secret to the recoil difference. The FTX design itself features a flex-tip that initiates expansion across a range of velocities, so performance doesn't suffer just because velocity is lower. Muzzle energy sits around 1,652 foot-pounds, which is plenty for medium game hunting.
Custom Lite slugs are designed specifically for fully rifled shotgun barrels, where the sabot design stabilizes properly and delivers the accuracy this ammunition is built for. From rifled barrels, you get a flatter trajectory and tighter groups compared to smooth-bore hunting. The ballistic coefficient improvement from the polymer tip means the slug retains energy better downrange, which matters if you're stretching shots past 75 yards.
The reduced recoil makes a real difference for younger shooters, smaller-framed hunters, and anyone dealing with recoil sensitivity. Less shoulder punishment means better follow-up accuracy and less flinching during practice. That said, these aren't weak rounds. They're capable field ammunition that happens to be easier to shoot.
No, these are designed for fully rifled barrels only. The sabot slug needs the rifling to stabilize and perform as intended. Smooth-bore shotguns require different slug designs, typically foster-style rifled slugs.
At its intended ranges (up to 150 yards), the Custom Lite is plenty effective for deer and medium game. You're trading a small amount of downrange energy for significantly less recoil, and at typical hunting distances, it performs reliably. The flex-tip expansion works across the velocity range of this load.
Both use the same 300-grain FTX projectile, but Custom Lite is loaded to 1,575 fps versus SST at 2,000 fps. This creates the lower recoil characteristic. If you need longer range or higher velocity, SST is the choice. Custom Lite is the right pick if you want to reduce shoulder punishment while staying effective in typical slug-hunting scenarios.
Reduced-recoil loads can be finicky in some semi-autos because they generate less energy to cycle the action. Test a few rounds first to confirm reliable function in your specific gun. Pump and lever-action shotguns have no issues with Custom Lite loads.
