The Hornady Black 12 gauge 2-3/4" 00 buckshot load delivers the kind of performance you want when it matters. Each shell packs 8 pellets of .33 caliber lead shot moving at 1600 fps, giving you solid knockdown power without the excessive recoil of magnum loads. This is a full-power load, not a reduced-recoil variation, so you get maximum ballistic performance from the 2-3/4" platform.
The key to these shells' reputation for tight patterns is the Hornady Versatite wad technology. It strips cleanly from the shot string, maintaining excellent pattern density and keeping pellets grouped tight throughout your defensive range. Testing shows the 8-pellet configuration patterns better and more consistently than 9-pellet loads, making follow-up shots more reliable. The ammunition functions equally well in semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns, whether you're running gas piston, inertia-operated, or traditional pump actions.
These shells come loaded in premium plastic hulls with high brass heads and feature a machine-pressed 6-segment crimp for smooth, jam-free feeding. The propellant is clean-burning with non-corrosive primers, so you don't have to worry about residue buildup limiting accuracy or reliability. The shell's black hull makes them easy to identify in any lighting condition, which matters when you need speed and confidence.
Whether you're training, hunting hogs or other medium to large game, or preparing for home defense, this is ammunition designed to perform. Ten rounds per box gives you enough to run practice drills without breaking the bank, and it's purpose-built for the platforms most people trust for protection.
Yes, these shells are specifically designed to function equally well in both semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns. At 1600 fps, the Hornady Black 00 buckshot delivers enough velocity to cycle gas and inertia-operated systems reliably. However, it's always wise to test a box through your specific shotgun to confirm function before relying on it.
The 8-pellet configuration used in Hornady Black ammunition tends to pattern more evenly and tighter than 9-pellet loads in standard 12-gauge, 2-3/4" shells. Many defensive shotgun trainers prefer 8-pellet loads for this reason. The more consistent pellet distribution at your intended range gives you better control and more reliable hits.
Both loads use the same 8-pellet 00 buckshot and Versatite wad technology, making them ballistically very similar. Hornady Black is their general-purpose ammunition line optimized for various platforms and uses, while Critical Defense is their specialized personal defense offering. For practical purposes, they'll perform nearly identically downrange.
No, 1600 fps is actually ideal for home defense. It's full-power but not magnum, delivering the ballistics needed without excessive recoil that makes follow-up shots difficult. The velocity also ensures the Versatite wad performs optimally for pattern density. That said, always pattern your shotgun at your expected defensive distances to see exactly how it groups.
