If you own a 30-40 Krag rifle, you know finding quality factory ammunition can be a challenge. Hornady Custom steps in to solve that problem with loads engineered to give vintage actions the accuracy and reliability of custom handloads. These rounds pair a 180-grain InterLock soft point with brass cases, all built to tight tolerances for consistent pressures, velocities, and shot placement.
Every round gets hand inspected before it ships, which is part of what separates Hornady Custom from standard factory ammunition. The 180-grain bullet weight sits right in the sweet spot for the Krag's capabilities, delivering about 2430 fps and 2360 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. That's more velocity than the original military load while staying safe for rifles that are often over 120 years old. The load performs best at short to moderate range, where the Krag naturally excels.
The heart of this ammunition is Hornady's InterLock bullet design, which uses a mechanical ring to lock the lead core to the jacket. This prevents core-jacket separation during expansion, which means more consistent terminal performance and better penetration. Hunters report tight bullet groups paired with reliable, predictable expansion on game. The soft point design opens up reliably across the velocity range you'll see from a Krag rifle, and the InterLock ring keeps the bullet together for deep, clean wounds.
There's no prep work or chrono testing required to get consistent performance between shots and between boxes. With hand inspection and tight manufacturing tolerances, these rounds deliver the consistency that makes a difference on the hunt. Whether you're working with a sporterized military rifle or a commercial Krag variant, this ammunition respects the mechanical limitations of your action while giving you ballistics that work for whitetail and similar-sized game.
Yes, it's loaded with vintage action safety in mind. At 2430 fps, it delivers more velocity than the original military load while staying well within safe pressure limits for rifles over 120 years old. Always have older rifles inspected by someone qualified before firing any ammunition, but factory Krag ammunition is typically safe when the rifle is in sound mechanical condition.
The 180-grain load works well for whitetail deer, hogs, and similar-sized game at short to moderate range. It delivers solid expansion and penetration through the InterLock bullet design. The Krag naturally performs best inside 200 yards, where this ammunition shines for hunting.
The InterLock ring mechanically locks the core to the jacket, which prevents separation and ensures consistent expansion and deep penetration. Users consistently report reliable expansion paired with good accuracy. It's a proven design that's been delivering hunting results since the 1970s.
Hornady Custom ammunition is hand inspected and loaded to tight tolerances for consistent pressures and velocities from shot to shot. This level of quality control is what separates it from standard factory loads and gets it compared to custom handloads. You can expect tight groups without extra testing or sorting.
